A Lifetime of Misery - An Animals' Angels investigator reports from the field

Did you know that over 2 million dogs are born in puppy mills each year. Yes, 2 million. That's not a typo. It's a big number, perhaps too big to really understand, so let me break it down. That means that there are 5,479 puppies born in these mills every single day.

As you can imagine, the owners of these operations aren't too keen to spend a tremendous amount of time or money on the well-being of these animals. It cuts into their profits. Mothers and pups alike are often kept stuffed in filthy wire cages stacked one on top of another in overcrowded conditions. Most of the puppies born into this sordid business are immediately taken from their mothers and sold to pet stores, where they are put into yet another inadequately sized container (and often suffer under additional negligent conditions), to be sold at exorbitant prices.

Sounds like a terrible way to start a life, doesn't it? Believe it or not, the ones who make it to the pet stores...these are the lucky ones.  Puppies that are sick, have birth defects, or are just too "ugly" to sell are often drowned or killed by a hammer blow to the skull.

You may be thinking that this sort of activity is horrendous. It is! It's also criminal. Yet it happens all the time. And it will continue to happen unless someone steps up to confront and punish the people behind these atrocities.

That's where Animals' Angels undercover investigations come in. Our investigators have already successfully exposed several large operations in states including Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Kentucky as well as the infamous Farmerstown Dog Auction in Holmes County, Ohio.

We are currently investigating operations in Missouri, the heart of the puppy mill industry, and you would be shocked to know what we've found already. At these mills the dogs get no sunshine, no exercise, and no fresh air. They often suffer through neglect and unimaginable filth. And what's worse is that this is all they know. That's life 24/7 for dogs confined to this horrific prison, a sad life they do not deserve.

Imagine a small, squalid room with tiny wire crates stacked on top of each other all the way up to the ceiling. Now imagine those crates packed full of dogs standing in their own feces and urine. Just thinking about the smell makes my stomach churn! This is a sad reality for so many dogs. This is the life they know. They deserve so much better.

Despite the atrocious and unsanitary conditions, the female dogs are expected to somehow have puppies in these disgusting conditions, because more puppies mean more money. The maltreated females are bred fifteen to twenty times and have up to ten pups in a litter. The poor males have it no better. All in the name of profit.

But as horrible as that is, it's nothing compared to the pain these devoted mothers go through when they lose their puppies. After the puppies are born, these heartless breeders snatch them away. Some of the puppies are as young as four weeks old.

The healthiest of the litters can fetch anywhere from $500 to $2,000 at a pet store. But the sick puppies? Breeders can maybe get $150 for them at roadside auctions or flea markets. If not, that hammer is always ready for use.

Just thinking about it makes me furious! I simply don't understand how people can be so cruel. Now do you see why I said the pups that make it to the pet stores are the "lucky" ones?

Hopefully these horrific realities are just as upsetting to you, because if we are ever going to save these dogs from the puppy mill torture and punish those behind it, we need your help.

As you probably know, enforcing animal cruelty laws is a low priority for law enforcement. BUT prosecutors will act if they have evidence, which is exactly what Animals' Angels tries to accomplish every single day. We're constantly in pursuit of enough evidence to hold these callous individuals accountable for their abusive activities, and with your help, we can do it.

Your gift of $50 or even $100 will not only help keep our undercover investigators in the field, it will also supply hi-tech drones and hidden cameras to catch dog abusers in the act.

Will you join the Animals' Angels family and help us? Won't you please help the dogs? If so, we'll make sure the inhuman criminals behind these brutal practices are punished to the fullest extent of the law. That's what Animals' Angels does best: protecting animals by bringing their abusers to justice.

Our investigators are working hard in the field every day, but there are still so many more puppy mills that we need to expose. Man's best friend truly needs a friend like you right now.
