I wanted to offer you something to ponder this month when it comes to our motivation for ministry. As your church thinks about how to reach those who have no relationship with the Lord, what is the driving motivation for doing this? Is it to see the church grow, or is it to see the unsaved come to faith in Jesus Christ? Now, you may be saying, "One should be a result of the other," and I would agree in principle. However, the question I am asking about is focused on the true motivation for what we are doing.
Consider how motivation forms the approach which is used in each case stated above. In one approach, promotion of the church's ministries and service times are a must; in the other approach ministry is the only focus. In one approach, success or effectiveness could be gauged by "How many people have attended the church as a result of this ministry?" In the other approach, success or effectiveness could be gauged by "How many people have we helped find Jesus?" (This latter difference usually surfaces most clearly when finances become tight and the church considers cutting programs.) The point being made here is that there is a difference. And what motivates us to ministry is what drives the approach we take or the ministries we engage.
I was reminded of this difference as I was preparing to teach out of the Sermon on the Mount. I was struck by Jesus' words from Matthew 6:1a, "Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them...." It made me ask, "How much of what I do is motivated by who gets the credit?" Then I started to ask, "What would be different if I did not care?" Jesus was teaching His listeners to live in such a way so it was God alone who got the credit.
Is it possible that operating from the wrong motivation could inadvertently cause our members to see ministry as a tool for church growth instead of a way to grow or reach people? Is it also possible that operating from the wrong motivation could subconsciously communicate to believers that the unchurched/unreached are simply an untapped resource for the church instead of dying people who need a Savior? The answer may very well lie in asking the question, "Who is getting the credit, the church or the Lord?" It is certainly a worthy question to consider.
God's Blessings,
Mike

Why Church Planting Is In Dire Need
| |
In 2010, we had 308,745,538 people living in the United States. Below is a percentage of each language speaking group lives here in California.
32.27% of Chinese
37.65% of Vietnamese
16.84% of the Arabic speakers
22.04% of the Hindi speakers
33.54% of the Hmong speakers
31.51% of the Japanese speakers
33.26% of the Korean speakers
79.07% of the Armenian speakers
50.00% of the Persian speakers
36.64% of the Mon-Khmer/ Cambodian speakers
24.05% of the Laotian speakers
48.57% of the Tagalog speakers
31.44% of the Thai speakers
27.36% of the Spanish speakers
For us here in OC, it will take cooperation and commitment to reach the unreached in our county. This will mean we must consider new ways for our churches to start new works. It will mean Chinese churches praying about supporting a Persian work. Hispanic churches praying about supporting a Japanese work. Korean churches praying about supporting a Tagalog work. English speaking churches praying about supporting a Thai work, etc...
We must find ways for our churches to ban together to reach the unreached that are all around us. Will you pray with me about what we can do together?

The E-block Party Trailer is hitched up and ready to come to your church!
e
Use your EBPT as a unique opportunity to reach your community twice during the comings double holiday season! Identify and adopt several families in your neighborhood, who will need food and clothing at
Thanksgiving, and those at Christmas, who will be unable to provide toys for their small children.
Then, combine an Evangelistic Block Party with a food and clothing drive at Thanksgiving and 'toys for tots' drive at Christmas. There will be very few chances like this for your church family to demonstrate God's love to the families in your community in such a tangible way.
Go right now to our website at ocsba.org and open the e-Block Party Trailer link. Click on "Reserve Now" to start the process to confirm your Thanksgiving and Christmas event dates.
