Cooperation is What We Still Need!
| |

It is funny how some things stick with you. Have you ever noticed how an aroma can cause you to think back to your childhood? Or how a particular song can transport you to another time? Many things can do this for us. For me, it was a passage of Scripture which the Lord brought to my memory during a quiet time. The passage is from Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, and here is what the Preacher said, "Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up. Furthermore, if two lie down together they keep warm, but how can one be warm alone? And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart." (NASB).
This passage from Ecclesiastes drew me back to the beginning of my Christian walk as a young man of 20. This was one of the first Scripture verses I committed to memory. It was a passage which my pastor spoke on many times to communicate the importance of the Christian community. It was also a passage which, for me, became synonymous with the words: Cooperative Program.
I was fortunate to have been discipled by a pastor who taught me the value of the Cooperative Spirit, which has been one of our greatest distinctions as Southern Baptists. There are other denominations that are evangelistic and Great Commission minded. There are other evangelical groups that hold to the inerrancy of Scripture. In fact, there are many other Evangelicals who do missions work; BUT NOT LIKE WE DO! And this is what has made us different historically. It is what has been at the heart of our greatest distinction; we found a way to do missions, together! But somewhere along the line we have lost this passion for cooperation as a denomination, and this breaks my heart.
There are many reasons which have been offered for why this decline in cooperative efforts. Some have blamed the economy. Others have blamed the personal agendas of a few denominational leaders. Maybe it is simply an issue of distrust in how our missions dollars have been spent, which has caused us to retreat from cooperation and seek ways to do it on our own. Whatever the reason, I have a passion to see trust restored and a desire to see cooperation for the sake of the Kingdom infused into our association once again. After all, God is bigger than any obstacle which currently stands in our way.
I realize I may be unique in my thinking, maybe even what some would call "archaic." But, I still believe that Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 has application for our denomination, and more specifically, for our association. I commit to work toward the purpose of seeing cooperation ignited within our association of churches. I still believe that when we work together for God's glory all will realize "a good return for their labor."
God's Blessings,
Mike
