I hope the holiday season was good to you. Between Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's, my family enjoyed time with each other, long car rides and making new memories. I managed to escape the flu and some colds along the way too!
My speaking business this past year kept me very busy, traveling a lot and meeting new people. I love the diversity of audiences I address. One week I can be speaking to engineers, the next CFO's, the next meeting planners and hoteliers. I try to leave every audience better than I found them and remind myself that no matter their position in life, they can benefit from being more organized and productive in life.
My husband Tony and I had something fun happen this past summer. Better Homes & Gardens interviewed us for their Storage Magazine and did a photo shoot of our walk-in closet. Nothing like a national magazine coming to your home to keep you on your toes! See below for a sneak peek into this article and photos.
In closing, as we move into 2014, please let me know if there's specific information you are looking for in this newsletter. I'm always open to suggestions and want to provide you with relevant information.
Be well. Be blessed.

Taking things slow in the New Year
Whether or not you included "Get Better Organized" on a New Year's resolution list, I want to encourage you to take some small steps over the next few months that will move you in that direction. People are often overwhelmed and don't know where to start a project which prevents them from making changes and improvements.
My suggestion is that you choose some smaller tasks; ones that are manageable in less than a 2-hour block of time. I have seen greater long-term success with organizing projects when people take them slowly at the beginning. I'm providing a short list here to help get you started, but I'm sure you'll come up with projects on your own as well.
- Clean out one closet this month.
- Plan out at least 4 meals/week for the rest of January. And then go to the store and shop your plan. Posting your menu plan in the kitchen will remind you of the items you've already planned and shopped for and will cut down on those last-minute eating out meals.
- Tidy up your purse. It's amazing the amount of clutter and garbage that we collect in our hand bags.
- De-clutter your car. Those in-the-door cubbies and consoles are great places to "stash 'n dash" when we're on the go. And don't forget to look underneath the seats!
- Clean out a junk drawer. If you have more than one, choose the one that will have the biggest impact on your daily activities. Most people have a junk drawer in the kitchen, which is a great place to start.
- Clean out your 2013 paper files. Keep only necessary items that will be used to do your tax returns.
- Gather receipts and other items for your tax preparation. If you hire a tax preparer, get an appointment on the calendar now which will motivate you to get this annual task done earlier rather than later.
Steps to getting started:
- Choose one organizing project that can be completed in less than two hours. It's important to start small; many disorganized people admit to starting projects that never get finished. So choose something that you know you can complete. You'll love the feeling of stepping back and seeing the fruits of your labor.
- Schedule the project on your calendar. This will speak to its importance and make it a priority. Choose a time of day when your energy level is high.
- When the time comes to organize, make sure you're well rested, well fed and well hydrated. Wear comfortable clothes. Have a bottle of water handy. Shut your cell phone off. In other words, eliminate potential distractions.
- Have a few containers handy for your organizing session. For example, a garbage can will be necessary as you'll come across items that need to get pitched. A donation bag is another helpful container as you might decide to donate things vs. tossing them.
- When your project is completed, be sure to reward yourself. My rewards almost always have to do with chocolate but choose something that will encourage you to tackle another project.

STORAGE Magazine -- On stands now
The spring issue of Better Homes & Gardens Storage Magazine is now on stands. On the cover you'll see this article call-out: "Closet Confessions of a Professional Organizer." Yes, that organizer would be me. My husband Tony and I were fortunate to have our walk-in closet featured in a 4-page spread. There are lots
of pictures so if you've ever wondered about my personal closet, here's your chance to do some anonymous snooping! Enjoy!
