Online Reminder Tools

If you find yourself consistently forgetting someone's birthday, anniversary or other special occasion, then use an online tool that sends you a reminder ahead of time.

My favorite is BirthdayAlarm. This free service sends me an email reminder but also allows me to choose from online e-cards.

Other online services include Snoozester and AnyReminder

September 2013

Greetings!

I recently turned a year older and was impressed with the variety of ways people wished me Happy Birthday. I received well wishes with phone calls, emails, Facebook postings, text messages, a personal visit, electronic cards sent to my Inbox and of course, the old fashioned birthday card arriving in my snail mailbox (still my favorite).

If there's someone in your life whom you've been meaning to reach out to, you don't have to spend time shopping for a card and putting it in the mail box. Getting in touch with people today is so much easier and faster, thanks to technology.

I encourage you to pick up the phone, pop off an email, post something on Facebook or send a text message to those who are special in your life.  And if you're consistently late with your greetings, be sure to read the article in the left column about online tools designed to keep you on track and on time.

Enjoy the fall season. It's my favorite!

3 Reasons to Purge in September

Starting an organizing project is sometimes the hardest step in the entire "getting organized" process.  For some of you, you'd rather do a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g than tackle the stuff that is hiding out on your shelves or tucked away in closets and cupboards. Here are three great reasons to begin an organizing project now:

  1. It's back-to-school time. If the kids can get their heads wrapped around being back in school, then it's a great time for us to engage in getting our homes back in order.
  2. September and October represent the "calm before the storm." They are the absolute perfect months to clear out clutter and sort through the stacks before the holidays arrive in November and December. Just imagine a more peaceful, organized home during the year's busiest season.
  3. By sorting and purging items now, you'll no doubt be able to make donations to a local charity, which
meanstax-deductions come springtime. As you make your donations, be sure to get a receipt and to file it away with other tax-related items.
Turbo Tax, the popular online tax preparation software, offers a FREE program called It's Deductible that helps you assign accurate values to and track your donations. And if you happen to use Turbo Tax, you can easily import this data when preparing your returns.  You do not need to be a Turbo Tax user in order to use It's Deductible.

Productivity Pointer:
Checking off the "Someday Later" List

I think everyone probably has a "Someday Later" list. It's one of those lists that time would need to stand still in order to get completed.  One of the things on my personal "Someday Later" list is to convert some VHS tapes to digital format.

Along the same lines, some of you have precious photos that are being stored in shoeboxes shoved under the bed or in the back of a closet.  I recently read about ScanMyPhotos.com, a service that digitizes print photographs.  For $159 they will convert approximately 1800 photos to digital format on a CD. The entire process takes 4-6 weeks. How wonderful is that?

You will finally have peace of mind that your family's photos have been preserved as well as be able to share them with friends and family.

This may be a great gift idea to give to someone who seems to already have everything or is hard to buy for. And it's never too early to start your Christmas shopping!
