Originally we had planned this week's newsletter to be a continuation of our last with “The Italians: Part Due.” However, we have some major news at SUITE New York.
We have just acquired the rights to sell David Rowland’s iconic 40/4 stacking chair.
Here are five reasons to love the 40/4...

|
1. Serious Stacking
The chair gets its name from its ability to stack 40 chairs only four feet high! Various dolly systems can stack a single set of chairs or up to four sets side by side. Rowland designed the chair so that just a slight lift and tilt slides each chair smoothly into place.

2. Color
The plastic resin version is available in nine color options while the wood veneer version is available in eight timbers. The chair also comes upholstered in fabric, trevira, microfiber or leather.

3. Reliability
Having sold over eight million units since its debut in 1964, the sparse 40/4 has stood the test of time in style and durability. In technical speak, the lightweight frame has been tested to DIN EN 1927-2000. In layman’s terms, it has been approved for “severe contract use.” If all else fails, the company offers an impressive 10 year warranty.

4. Prestige
40/4 won Grand Prize at the Milan Triennale (one of only two American designs to do so) and is in the permanent collection at a number of museums including MoMA, the Design Museum in London and Paris's Musee des Arts Decoratifs. Designer David Rowland studied under Moholy-Nagy and attended the prestigious Cranbrook Academy’s graduate architecture program alongside Eero Saarinen, Florence Knoll and the Eameses.

5. Function
A pilot in WWII, Rowland flew missions up to twelve hours in “beastly uncomfortable (cockpit) seats.” He vowed that if he survived he would devote his life to the creation of comfortable and ergonomically correct seating. After years of research and testing, the practical and functional 40/4 was born. Beyond the simple stacking chair, versions with arms, linking systems and mounted writing tablets are also available, as well as finishes for outdoor use.
