A Framework for Understanding Poverty

Saturday, April 18, 2015
8:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
AEA 267 Marshalltown, IA

Event is sponsored by Marshall County ELCA Hunger Ministries

Living in poverty has a profound effect on the way a person views the world. The premise behind Ruby Payne's book, A Framework for Understanding Poverty is that people who come from generational poverty often lack the skills needed to successfully negotiate the world. There are factors that contribute to one's ability to function in the community and at work including: language and language development, hidden socioeconomic class rules, and the availability of resources. In this course, participants will learn about the eight resources people need to succeed, the hidden rules of socioeconomic class and the part that community members can play in assisting people in poverty. Bishop Eaton: Baptism begins real new year

A new year. Time to start over. A fresh set of possibilities. Out with bishop eaton the old, in with the new. New Year's resolutions are made-usually along the lines of self-improvement. And so, with a combination of optimism and grim determination, we set out into the New Year.

But how long does our resolve last? Days? Weeks? It's a good bet that the gym will be a lot less crowded at the end of January than it was at the beginning.

New Year's resolutions are symptoms of our underlying dis-ease. We sense that our lives are not entirely the way they should be. We have an obscured image of the beauty and wholeness of God's good creation. There is a gap between who we are and who we have been created to be. So we try to fill that gap ourselves. We are going to eat right, work out, fix our relationships, floss regularly, lose weight, corral our calendars, clean the garage, learn another language, etc., etc., etc. Read the rest of the January column here

Mission in Peru

When she was seven years old, Patricia wondered why so many children gathered at a nearby congregation during a school break. Her curiosity led her to discover its Vacation Bible School program - and soon after, faith in Christ.

Years later, Patricia felt God calling her to ministry. She became one of the first ordained pastors of the Peruvian Lutheran Evangelical Church, even serving as president. Download the rest of the article Word (.docx) or as PDF

Anti-Racism Workshop

Martin Luther King Day
January 19,2015
9:00AM-3:00PM
Synod Center for Ministry

Let us resolve to not let the events in Ferguson be for nothing. We have tremendous power to initiate healing and change within our communities. Rather than sit back and watch, let us come together to listen to each other, share our stories, hold each other in faith, and work toward a common goal.

"Despite the anger, violence and injustice connected with this sad and horrible tragedy, we should not abandon our hope or our neighbors. The reconciliation we have with God in Christ leads us to our neighbors with the hope that we can engage one another in a common cause.  We come together at the cross. It is our only hope. And, resting in the conviction that we are redeemed, we can begin the hard work of confronting the reality of systemic racism in our country. Because of the cross, we have peace; we have hope; we are loved."  Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton speaking of events in Ferguson, MO.

Worship Jubilee
How is God calling the church today? And to what are Christians called? These fundamental questions will be taken up by those who come to Atlanta July 19-23 for Worship Jubilee, gathering as worshiping people: those who make music, those who preside and preach, those simply curious, and all who seek the ongoing renewal of worship for the sake of the gospel and for the life of the world.
