Remember in Prayer

Creator God, you trusted us to protect the earth, to protect our future and the future of our children. We give thanks for this church's global partnerships that work to offer a unique understanding of the

impact climate change is having on the food security and livelihoods of vulnerable people and communities around the world.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
First observed in 1908, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is celebrated internationally from January 18-25 every year. It is a wonderful opportunity for neighbors to show the unity of the church that is Christ's gift by worshiping together; exchanging preachers for a Sunday; or coming together for learning, fellowship or service.

The theme of the 2015 Week of Prayer is "Jesus Said to Her, 'Give Me a Drink,'" finding in the story of the Samaritan woman at the well encouragement for seeking unity in the midst of diversity. Materials to help plan and celebrate, including an order of worship for a service of the Word, are available on the Graymoor Ecumenical and inter-religious Institute website - www.geii.org. Or contact Pr. Chris Olkiewicz (revchris@whlc.org) for more information.

Alternative Christmas Market

Advent is a time of expectant waiting and preparation for Christmas Day when we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Advent is also a time marked with holiday celebrations filled with music, food, and gift giving. If you walk into Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City on Sunday, November 23, you will experience all of these things. For the past seven years, members of Zion have celebrated the beginning of Advent season with an Alternative Christmas Market. Organized by Beth Noyes and a team of 12-15 congregation members and staff, the Alternative Christmas Market is one of the most anticipated events of the year. Read More

Worship Matters! But Why?
Led By: The Rev. Kevin L. Strickland
ELCA Director for Worship and Liturgical Resources

January 15-16, 2015
Carol Joy Holling Camp, Conference and Retreat Center,

Ashland, NE

Worship is central to gathering the community of faith around ordinary things, which becomes spiritual sustenance for a hungry heart. For Lutherans, worship matters.  In fact, worship lies at the heart of how we understand ourselves together as mission people. ELCA Pastors and Worship Leaders won't want to miss this two-day educational event. It is a chance to learn new ideas and share what you are doing.

Mozart Mass
Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny is preparing Mozart's Missa Brevis in F, a Mass that will be sung in worship with choir, soloists and orchestra on Sunday, November 23 at their 8:00 & 9:30 am services.

Written when Mozart was only 18 years of age, this work sparkles with joy. It is a perfect way to celebrate the Festival of Christ the King--the final day of the Church Year. More information
