Remember in Prayer

We pray for all nations that are struggling with Ebola outbreaks. Through ELCA World Hunger, Lutheran Disaster response and the ELCA Malaria Campaign, we walk together with our Lutheran companions all over the world as they respond to hunger, disaster and disease with compassion and action.

Synod News
Faithful People, Holy Lands
How big are the blocks of the temple? What color is the wilderness? What does the wind on the Sea of Galilee feel like? While we can learn a lot about Christ's life and death from scripture, there are a lot of details we can only know from first-hand experience.
Here's your chance! On September 11-25, 2015, members of the Southeastern Iowa Synod are making a pilgrimage to Israel and Palestine. Pastor Dan Kuckuck (St. Stephen, Urbandale) hosts this trip along with Monte Luker, Professor of Hebrew Scriptures at Lenoir-Rhyne University and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. For more information, contact Pastor Dan Kuckuck 515-276-4628 dan@ststephenlutheran.org or find out more here.

Young Adults in Global Mission

Anastasia Osbeck, daughter of Rev. Roger and Rev. Janelle Osbeck, and JohnDaniel (JD) Engelhardt, son of Chaplain Marcus and Joanne Engelhardt, both from Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Des Moines, are the Southeastern Iowa Synod's Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) this year. Anastasia is serving in the United Kingdom at St. Andrews Anglican and Methodist Church in Paddock Wood, England. JD is serving in Vohipeno, Madagascar.

JD spent the first few weeks in Madagascar with the other YAGMs in the classroom learning the Malagasy language and exploring the streets of a new land. Upon completion of his language study, JD has headed to his YAGM placement in Vohipeno, a small farm town on the east coast of Madagascar. By Bishop Elizabeth Eaton

"I'm spiritual, not religious." How many times have we heard that, usually from people who consider their unchurched status a mark of honor. When I heard this as a parish pastor, I became frustrated, especially when folks waxed lyrical about a spiritual experience engendered from contemplating the beauty of a mountaintop. This was perplexing because I served in Ohio. There are no mountains. I was tempted to dismiss it as laziness. But now I think they are on to something.

This coincides with what I am thinking after a year in office. The four "emphases" or "strategic intents" or "things" I've identified-we are church, we are Lutheran, we are church together, we are church for the sake of the world-have resonance across the ELCA. It's how I'm organizing my work. Continue reading

Mission of the Month: New life for children in Tanzania
Children in rural Tanzania are getting the medical care they need thanks to ELCA missionaries Dr. Stephen Friberg and his wife, Bethany Friberg. But "mission doctors know it is God who does the healing," they say. Share this inspiring story with your congregation. For a colorful Word document to display on a bulletin board or use in a newsletter or PowerPoint presentation  visit  www.ELCA.org/resources/globalchurch.
