Remember in Prayer

Merciful God, help us reach out to those who are stumbling in deep, dark sadness, and who have thoughts towards suicide. As a community of faith, guide us as we bring awareness to this very real
and tragic epidemic, so that those who suffer may find hope and meaning for their lives.

Mission Link: new quarterly publication for congregations

Mission Link is the first of three new print and electronic publications that the synod office will be releasing in the next year. The purpose of these publications is to enhance the work we do together by telling stories of ministry throughout our synod, and by providing support and resources that we hope will benefit leaders and congregations in our shared witness witness to the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Mission Link is a quarterly publication that highlights the ministry programs and resources available to congregations through the Southeastern Iowa Synod Center for Ministry. Mission Link will be made available to congregations in October, January, April and July. Please share this communication piece in your Sunday morning bulletin, monthly newsletter, or on your website.

The Fall 2014 edition of Mission Link. It is available as a full page lay-out and as a half-page lay-out and can be downloaded from the synod website here.

ELCA World Hunger Placemats
The synod office has a supply of ELCA World Hunger placemats available for congregations to use. The placemats can be used in a variety of settings, especially with youth, and describe the work of ELCA World Hunger and include discussion questions, stories, hunger quiz and other activities.

If you would like a pack of placemats for use in your congregation (each pack contains 30 placemats) please contact Pr. Paul Ostrem ostrem@seiasynod.org.

See Each as Brother, Sister
bishop eaton

I remember a particularly contentious meeting with a church council when I was a synod bishop. It didn't start out that way, but bit by bit the mood changed. Council members began to question my motives, then my veracity, then my character. Finally I said, "Hey, I have a mother you know." That broke the tension. My point was that I was a human being just like them, not a bloodless functionary. I had become "The Man," which made me sad and was hugely confusing for my husband.

I would like to say this was an isolated incident in my experience of life in the church, but it was not. Nor is it confined to the church. Suspicion and blame aren't new. Bearing false witness was around way before Moses received the commandments. But it seems that the climate of distrust and accusation in society has become more heated. It's just more disappointing when it happens in the church. Read More

The Ebola crisis needs your help

In the last several months, the Ebola outbreak has claimed thousands of lives. The virus has spread rapidly, and with no approved vaccine and high fatality rate, the World Health Organization is now calling it "one of the world's most lethal diseases." Ebola has spread to multiple countries, the hardest hit being Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea.

Our partners and companion churches have requested our help in responding to the outbreak with food distributions, shipment of personal protective equipment, training health workers, outreach through education about prevention, and construction of an isolation unit in Liberia. Your gifts to Lutheran Disaster Response designated for the Ebola Outbreak Response will be used in full, 100%, to assist those who are suffering and living with the threat of this virus.
