Led by the Spirit: Together in conversation
Conference gatherings begin
meeting this week and will continue through September. All members of the Southeastern Iowa Synod are invited to join Bishop Michael Burk as he leads a time of conversation focused on creating a deeper understanding of what it means to walk together as we are Led by the Spirit to fulfill the mission of Christ's church. 
 
Who: All members of the Southeastern Iowa Synod
What: Time for conversation, listening, relationship building
When: Throughout this month (dates and locations are listed on the synod website)
 
This event combines the annual conference assembly and the Evening with the Bishop from prior years.
Definitely-Abled Sunday, September 21
At the 2014 Southeastern Iowa Synod Assembly the assembly passed a resolution that resolved that the third Sunday of September in 2014 and 2015 be designated as"Definitely-Abled Sunday" within the Southeastern Iowa Synod. 
 
Congregations are invited participate in Definitely-Abled Sunday on September 21, 2014 or on a Sunday that works best for your congregation. Congregations can participate by:
  • Offering prayers and litanies during worship service
  • Incorporate readings that highlight the capabilities, issues and struggles of those with disabilities. Suggested texts are included in the resolution.
  • During the service or educational hour lift up the work and ministry of MOSAIC and ELCA Disability Ministry

Uh oh.

Paul wrote this to the Corinthians who were going astray. They were quite smitten with the elegant formulas of the Greek philosophers. The wisdom of the wise was a good thing.

Foolishness, on the other hand, was considered a moral defect. They had become boastful, and Paul had to remind them that not many of them were wise or powerful or noble according to the standards of the world. Keep Reading...

Synod Events
Fall Theological Conference
Register by September 14
Rostered leaders of the Southeastern Iowa Synod are invited to attend the Fall Theological Conference, September 28-30 at St. Paul Lutheran Church,Davenport. Early registration ends on September 14. Register today to avoid the higher rate.

Hotel accommodations are being provided at Best Western Plus Steeplegate Inn in Davenport. Rooms are being held under "Southeastern Iowa Synod Theological Conference" and will be released on September 14. Call 563-386-6900 to make your reservation this week.

You're Invited
Cedar River Theological Education Forum

When: The second Thursday of each month, September through May. 9:00-11:45 a.m.  Coffee at 9:00, Devotions and program 9:30 - 11:45.

Place:    St. Andrew Lutheran, 4420 Center Point Rd. NE, Cedar Rapids.

Cost:    $110 for all nine sessions.

 

New season begins on Thursday, September 11. Upcoming presenters include:

September:  Reflections and Conversation on ELCA Social Statement "The Church and Criminal Justice: Hearing the Cries", presented by Warden John Fayram & Associate Warden Tracy Dietsch from Anamosa State Penitentiary.

October:  Sustainable Leadership, presented by Diana Gabriel, Certified Professional Coach.

November: Unaccompanied & Migrant Children: Background and Response, presented by Michael Stadie, Program Director, Lutheran Disaster Response US. 

December: Considering the Christian Tradition through a Lutheran Lens in Relation to World Religions, presented by Dr. Winston Persaud, Professor at Wartburg Seminary.

Dr. Craig Nessan at Holy Trinity in Ankeny
Dr. Craig Nessan as will be the guest preacher and teacher on Sunday, September 21. Beginning at 1:15 PM, Dr Nessan will offer a presentation based on his book "Shalom Church" which addresses an integrated and vital vision for mission and ministry dedicated to the "healing of all creation." The presentations and discussions will conclude at 3:30 PM. There is no charge for the sessions. They will take place at:
