Led by the Spirit: Together in Conversation

Join Bishop Michael Burk as he leads a time of conversation focused on creating a deeper understanding of what it means to walk together as we are Led by the Spirit to fulfill the mission of Christ's church.

In addition to time in a large group setting, each gathering will also provide opportunity for congregations within each conference to engage with one another, form connections, and make decisions. Each conference is responsible for nominations and elections to the synod council, Churchwide Assembly in August 2016, and other committees.

This event is for all members of the Southeastern Iowa Synod, and combines the annual conference assembly and The Evening with the Bishop from prior years.

Go to the SEIA Synod website for event dates and locations at:http://seiasynod.org/conference-gatherings/

Long-term care insurance

During June - August 2014, sponsored plan members ages 18-65 working 20+ hours per week can apply for long-term care insurance with simplified underwriting (you answer a short list of questions about your health vs. a longer list).

Having long-term care insurance can help you manage the costs of that care should you need it in the future. In the process, it can help you protect your assets and maintain your independence, which helps preserve your financial and emotional well-being. To learn more visit Portico Benefits online.

Faith in Action
Congregations in the SEIA Synod put their faith into action
On "God's work. Our hands." Sunday 14 congregations from the Southeastern Iowa Synod are partnering with local grocery stores and communities to donate food for local food pantries and more. Their goal - to fill 14 pick-up trucks with non-perishable food, as well as invite members of the community to come and worship at the 14 different locations.

"We hope that the community will see Lutherans being church in the world, responding to the needs of others - in this case those who are hungry," said the Rev. Travis Fisher, pastor of St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church in Davenport, Iowa. "It will also show that we as congregations are working together for the sake of the gospel."

The SEIA Synod will be collecting stories and photos from congregations from "God's work. Our hands." Sunday for publication on the website. Send your photos and stories to Minda Davison at davison@seiasynod.org

Great Expectations not novel
Stephen P. Bouman, executive director of the ELCA
bishop eaton

Congregational and Synodical Mission unit, often uses this Bible story when talking to groups about the possibilities for mission and ministry in their neighborhood. He asks them what catches their attention in this story-some say the desperate poverty, others say the anguish of children being forced into slavery. Everyone says the miracle of the oil. Keep reading...

You Are Invited
LSTC invites you: "Music that Makes Community"
"Music that Makes Community" is a two and a half day workshop for clergy, musicians, cantors, lay leaders, and anyone wanting to learn how to teach and lead assembly song without books, screens, or paper. This ancient/new way of singing is fast becoming another important tool for worship leaders to use in bridging the divide between "traditional/contemporary" in a culture increasingly unfamiliar with communal singing.

Skilled leaders from around the country will introduce the practices and techniques then coach participants in learning together by doing.

Register by August 25th for discounted prices:
$150 for individuals
$125 per person - groups of 2
$110 per person - groups of 3+
$25 for students

Go to www.musicthatmakescommunity.org and click on the "MMC in Chicago" tab to register or learn more.
