Care for the unaccompanied children from Central America

 

Statement from ELCA Bishops in Iowa

Scripture repeatedly, and unapologetically, calls for God's people to welcome the stranger, the alien, the orphan, the widow, and the sojourner. This is why the refugee crisis that continues to unfold on the southern border of the United States is of particular concern to Christians.

 

Reports from leaders of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) who have visited the border have helped many of us who watch from afar to understand some of the dynamics that are lost in media reporting, especially when couched in the context of current political tensions and debate. 2014 Fall Theological Conference
Rostered leaders of the Southeastern Iowa Synod are invited to attend the Fall Theological Conference, September 28-30, 2014 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport. 
 
This annual event provides opportunity for leaders to gather together for three days of fellowship, learning, and dialogue with one another. The theme for this year's conference is "Speaking with Greater Boldness:  Public Witness on the Model of Philippians. Fjeldberg Youth
Youth visit Synod Center for Ministry
Confirmation youth from Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley visited and toured the Synod Center for Ministry on July 17. The visit and tour was part of their mini mission trip to Chicago.

ELCA leaders to visit shelters for unaccompanied children
To learn more about the recent arrival of unaccompanied children into the United States, a group of leaders from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) traveled to Texas July 16-18. Their time was spent visiting children shelters and facilities managed by Lutheran Social Services of the South, based in Austin, Texas, and meeting with ELCA pastors and members to hear about their experiences and response efforts. ELCA missionaries walk hand in hand with their brothers and sisters in the global church. It's a life of sharing rather than leading.
