From MAK:

Introducing... Hannah Herself!

I have often been asked if I have a picture of Hannah Grimes. I do have a picture of her lovely home from 1883, but no picture of her.  Born, quite notably, in 1776, but married at 30, I always imagined she might have been plain. Or, now that I have a teenage daughter of my own, maybe her parents more successfully exercised the "brick on her head" method of keeping their daughter from growing up too quickly. I have often tried to imagine her at what is now my lovely home and now I have some help. Hannah Grimes Marketplace member and highly regarded folk artist Tim Campbell has donated a painting of Hannah Herself that will reside at the Hannah Grimes Center with prints available for sale at the Marketplace.  It is beautiful, I got a quick peek yesterday.

Why is it important in the 21st century for us to know or care about a woman born in the 18th century?  She provides a great example for us today.  What she and her family could not do, make or grow for themselves, they bought from or traded with friends and neighbors in a regional marketplace that positively bustled.  A strong local marketplace for goods and services weaves people and communities together in interdependent economic relationships. A lot has changed since Hannah Grimes Marketplace opened in 1997, in this case, for the better.  There is a growing awareness of the value of buying locally and of how easy it is for each of us to contribute to a region will shine as one with a vibrant, entrepreneurial community  that maximizes economic opportunity.

A community of people and businesses committed to local trade whenever possible will showcase this region's resources, highlight its delicious tastes, support its distinctive arts and industry, and honors, enriches and connects its people.

Have fun doing your part!

Keep up the good work,

Mak
