Dear Fellow Booklovers,

It is true that the pleasures of working in a bookstore include being able to spend time talking about books with people, and matching books with readers. In that spirit we would like to highlight some of our picks for children's books for gift giving and holiday reading this season.

Children's

Little Bird, by Germano Zullo

Europeans write and illustrate some beautiful children's books. Little Bird is one of those books. With few words and crisp illustrations, a gift for child or adult any time of the year that you may be tempted to pick up for yourself. Brought to us by St. Paul's own Consortium Book Sales and Distribution. (Mary)

Starry River of the Sky, By Grace Lin
A beautiful book, both in design and story, about a young boy named Rendi who has run away from home. After noticing the moon disappear from the sky Rendi finds himself working as a chore boy at an inn in a small village in the mountains, then a mysterious guest with the gift of storytelling arrives. Newberry Honor author, Grace Lin beautifully weaves together a magical mystery involving a number of fascinating characters with a collection of Chinese folktales. Illustrated with numerous full color plates and a beautiful dust jacket design, this book would make a wonderful gift for any age. (Jessi)

Tales from Outer Suburbia, by Shaun Tan
If you have never discovered Shaun Tan's mysterious, atmospheric, captivating artwork, you're in for a treat. He is primarily known for his children's books and gorgeous, wordless graphic novel, The Arrival (also highly recommended!), but this book proves he has a way with words as well. This collection of short stories runs the gamut from eerie to heartwarming, and they are perfectly complemented by the dreamlike illustrations (or is it the other way around?). (Sara)
by Nancy Tillman
When you have a child, you no longer think only of yourself. Your limits to giving love hold no bounds. You couldn't imagine loving anything more. This book is the sweetest testament to being a parent and the forever love and care you have for your child. It will follow them wherever they go. Definitely a special book to read to your child. (Michelle)
A Christmas Carol: A BabyLit Colors Primer, by Jennifer Adams, Illus. Alison Oliver

Clever takes on favorite adult classics, BabyLit is a series of board books that introduces children to literature by way of counting and colors.  They are bound to delight parents who find themselves dutifully reading and rereading books on their child's bookshelf.  In addition to A Christmas Carol, the series currently includes Alice in Wonderland, Dracula, Jane Eyre, Pride & Prejudice, and Romeo & Juliet. (Mary)

Bel Ria: Dog of War, by Sheila Burford

Sheila Burnford offers the spellbinding tale of a small dog caught up in the Second World War, and of the extraordinary life-transforming attachments he forms with the people he encounters in the course of a perilous passage from occupied France to besieged England. Another cool looking NYRB for kids written by the author of Incredible Journey, and just as good. (Andy)

Every Human Has Rights offers kids an accessibly written list of the 30 rights set down by the UN in 1948. The commentary-much of it deeply emotional-by other kids, and richly evocative photography illustrate each right. At the end of the book, kids will know-and feel-that regardless of individual differences and circumstances, each person is valuable and worthy of respect. (Gary)

T is for Twin Cities brings together impressive sculptures, historical landmarks, famous people, and the natural beauty to showcase this thriving Minnesota region. Learn about the husband and wife team of sculptors who created the famous Spoonbridge and Cherry. Tour the James J. Hill mansion. Learn about the man behind the beloved "Prairie Home Companion" or take in a concert at Orchestra Hall. (Gary)

One Frozen Lake, by Deborah Jo Larson, Illus. Steven Johnson and Lou Fancher

The cover alone of this beautifully illustrated book brings me back to a drive along Mille Lacs in the dead of winter, and the feeling of seeing a mirage as the city on the lake came into view.  What hearty people we are in MN.  What a nice book to share with a young one. (Mary)
