How much water do you drink every day? The standard recommendation has always been 8-10 glasses per day, but that is only part of the equation. According to the Institute of Medicine, the average woman should drink 2.7 liters or 91 oz. of water per day and the average man should drink 3.7 liters or 125 oz. per day.
That suggestion does not take a lot of things into consideration such as:
- What climate you live in
- The weather - you should drink more when it is hot.
- Your activity level - obviously, the more active you are, the more you should drink.
- How much you perspire or urinate
Many people think that drinking soda or coffee qualifies as drinking water, but guess what? If they contain caffeine, they can act as a diuretic and actually dehydrate you.
Most studies show that about 2/3 of us are dehydrated. How to gauge when you need to drink water, especially if you typically don't experience thirst (the body's signal that 1-2% of the body's water has been lost)?
There are some
subtle signals that can show that you need more water, such as fatigue or mood swings, hunger (especially if you've eaten recently), back or joint pains, dull, dry skin and/or pronounced wrinkles, infrequent urination that is dark and concentrated, and/or constipation.
Worse, if you are dehydrated, you may experience any of the following: Heartburn, constipation, confusion and/or anxiety, urinary tract infections, premature aging, high cholesterol, dark-colored infrequent urination.
Elderly people, particularly those with dementia, or anyone on medication may experience dehydration.
If you are drinking enough water, you should be urinating 7-8 times per day and the urine should be a light-colored yellow. Bear in mind that riboflavin (vit. B2) can cause your urine to turn a fluorescent yellow. Check your vitamins.
