Only that day dawns to which we are awake" ~ Henry David Thoreau

Greetings!

I am grateful to live and work in Concord, Massachusetts...home to a pond called Walden, made famous by a young Concordian of the 19th century, Henry David Thoreau. You might imagine that Walden Pond is a secluded oasis; far from the hustle and bustle of modern life. If fact Walden is very much part of the world in which we live...bordered by a major highway leading to Boston, often packed with commuters from early morning until late in the evening. In Thoreau's day a busy railroad line ran within sight and sound of Walden Pond, hauling commercial goods and passengers into the city multiple times each day. Yet it is this duality of finding stillness within busyness that inspired Henry David Thoreau to make this place his refuge. Walden is as much a state of mind as a place, allowing us to cultivate our innate ability to be mindful within the complex world in which we live.

This month, I am pleased to offer some suggestions for becoming more awake and aware within the busyness of your life.  Whether you are interested in the mindfulness of narrative, attending a day of silent meditation, listening to Oprah and Jon Kabat-Zinn discuss mindfulness for beginners, or want to wade into the waters of mindfulness training with me ...I hope you find what you need to thrive.

As always, I appreciate your thoughts, comments and feedback on this newsletter. Please feel free to share it with your friends and colleagues.

Wishing you a month of mindfulness,
Pam

2015 Spring Schedule

Meditation Maintenance Sessions
are a great way to give yourself a monthly self-care "tune-up" by joining with fellow meditators to discuss insights and challenges of your practice.

Due to a rent increase for my office space, 2015 Meditation Maintenance will be $20 per session. However, if this increase is difficult for you, I welcome you to pay whatever feels right for you. My intent in offering for these meditation sessions has always been and continues to be to create a space open, accessible and affordable to all.

Our general schedule is the 2nd Wednesday (evening) and 2nd Friday (afternoon) of each month. However, there may be some months when we will meet on other Wednesdays or Fridays. Please see the schedule below.

You are welcome to attend each month or simply on an occasional basis. You will find a supportive and welcoming respite in the midst of your busyness.

Narrative Playbook: The Strategic Use of Story to Improve Care, Healing and Health

wire-bound-pad.jpg I am honored to have been one of 30 thought leaders from the U.S. and U.K. invited by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Business Innovation Factory to come together and produce a first of its kind Narrative Playbook for Healthcare. I am very proud of the final result...a living, breathing, changeable document that is meant to guide patients, caregivers and providers in the importance of the narrative in health.  Please help us share this Narrative Playbook widely, as a unique and free resource.  Take a look at the short video before you dive into the playbook.

I would love to hear your comments, thoughts, feedback on the Narrative Playbook, so we can continue to work to make it even better!
Mindfulness Meditation Retreat Day to be held on Saturday, May 2
meditation class from Boston Globe
You asked, I listened! I have had many requests to schedule a day of mindfulness in the form of a meditation retreat day from my students over the years. I am pleased to announce that Stress Resources will be hosting our first Day of Mindfulness Retreat Day on Saturday, May 2 from 9 am-2 pm at the First Parish in Concord, MA.

This is a day that will be spent in mostly in silence, moving between sitting meditation and walking meditation with a time for tea and discussion at the end of the day. We will be able to use the outdoor labyrinth space for walking meditation, if desired. Take a look at my website for more detailed information about what the day will look like and what to bring.

Participants should have a working knowledge of mindfulness meditation (previous attendance at a MBSR program or individual mindfulness training).

Retreat space is limited to 25. Cost is $40 per person. Register online
Mindfulness: Jon Kabat-Zinn and Oprah

You know mindfulness practice has become ubiquitous when Oprah schedules an hour long interview on her show "Soul Sunday" with MBSR (mindfulness based stress reduction) founder, Jon Kabat-Zinn. As interest in mindfulness continues to grow, it is a good reminder that the ability to practice mindfulness resides in each of us and is as simple (or sometimes as difficult) as noticing this breath and this moment. Here is a link to Oprah's Soul Sunday and Jon Kabat-Zinn
