Greetings!
Fall Song by Mary Oliver Another year gone, leaving everywhere its rich spiced residues: vines, leaves, the uneaten fruits crumbling damply in the shadows, unmattering back from the particular island of this summer, this NOW, that now is nowhere except underfoot, moldering in that black subterranean castle of unobservable mysteries - - -roots and sealed seeds and the wanderings of water. This I try to remember when time's measure painfully chafes, for instance when autumn flares out at the last, boisterous and like us longing to stay - - - how everything lives, shifting from one bright vision to another, forever in these momentary pastures. October always seems like a boisterous, over the top, month to me. A month filled with a cacophony of blazing colors, sounds, smells and tastes. A month that seems to have a desperate need to be noticed, to be the life of the party, the last hurrah before the quiet sleep of winter? Don't turn away and say you don't have time...open your eyes, open your senses and let it all in, bathing yourself in the glorious crazy quilt of autumn. Because as with any great party, it will end too soon.
Enjoy the party, Pam |

Relationship between Brain, Addiction and Mindfulness Meditation
| |
Neuroscience research continues to uncover fascinating relationships between the brain and behavior. Interesting research on addiction and stress and how they affect brain connections is being done by the Brudnick Neuropsychiatric Institute at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. One of the interventions being explored is mindfulness meditation, which appears to have a positive effect. Dr. Judson Brewer of the UMass Medical School was recently interviewed about his research on WBUR's
Brain Matters
Dr. Brewer will explore the relationship between stress, addiction and meditation in a talk entitled: Your Mind on Meditation in Newton MA on Wed. Oct 22 (7-9 PM). Tickets are available through Newton Community Education.
