September 2014
Greetings!

grapes-on-vine.jpg

I have spent the past week observing the incredible bounty of late summer as it turns into autumn. I have been doing this from a different perspective; instead of the East Coast I am on the West Coast in Northern California, marveling at the resilience of nature.

As many of you are aware, California is in the midst of historic drought conditions. Riverbeds are dry and rocky, the grasses along the roadways look like dry straw, the soil appears parched.  Yet, the grape harvest is not only surviving but even thriving. I learned that grape vines have tap roots reaching deep beneath the earth, some nearly 40 feet, accessing water when none is externally visible. I am struck with the similarity with human resilience --often hopefulness is buried deeply beneath the surface. If we can set our inner roots deep enough we are better able to receive sustenance in less than hospitable conditions. Mindfulness is one way that we set our roots deeply. During this month, I invite your to look within and grow those inner roots of resilience.

Wishing you a month of growing your inner roots,

Pam

Medicine X at Stanford University

Communicating the Experience of Illness in the Digital Age...I was honored to moderate a panel of incredible thought leaders in the field of patient communities, Susannah Fox, Meredith Gould and Colleen Young, at the acclaimed Medicine X conference at Stanford University on September 7.

A vibrant, thoughtful discussion unfolded both on the stage and online about the benefits and barriers in online communities, disclosure versus privacy, and connection versus isolation. The full panel discussion was recorded and is available here (starting at 1:16)

Labyrinth and Lunch on Sept 20

If you weren't able to join us last year...I will be repeating the popular Labyrinth Retreat at Fat Moon Farm in Westford, MA on Saturday, September 20 from 11 am to 1 pm.

We will gather at the organic farm and get an overview of the flower labyrinth that has been growing all summer. After some reflection, we will walk the labyrinth in silence, then gather over a light, vegetarian lunch, reflect and discuss our experience. We may even write and share some mindful haiku with each other.

$35 pp, includes handouts, labyrinth walk, farm to table lunch. Limited to 15. Registration is required by Tuesday Sept 16. Register on the Fat Moon Farm secure site or email me and I will register you by phone.
