May/June 2014
Greetings!

"Life is made of moments, small pieces of silver amidst long stretches of tedium. It would be wonderful if they came to us unsummoned, but particularly in lives as busy as the ones most of us lead now, that won't happen. We have to teach ourselves now to live, really live . . . to love the journey, not the destination." ~ Anna Quindlen

I love the image that Anna Quindlen paints in the quote above, "Life is made of moments, small pieces of silver amidst long stretches of tedium". It reminds me of a card I received from a friend when we were both in the early days of motherhood that succinctly proclaimed..."long days, short years"  The essence of mindfulness is wrapped in the dichotomy of awe-inspiring moments and tedious routine. Noticing the impermanence of each is what mindfulness practice is all about. Seemingly simple, but yet never easy.

In this newsletter, I have included some upcoming events at which I will be speaking -- all open to the public with just an RSVP. I would love to greet you at any of these events. I welcome your feedback and comments about the newsletter, and appreciate you passing it along to friends and colleagues who may be interested in the work of Stress Resources.

Wishing you a month of noticing moments,
Pam

Zentangle
Zentangle is a interesting form of meditation that entails drawing repetitive patterns on paper. If you are familiar with mandalas or repetitive pattern making, you will be intrigued with Zentangles. The best part is you need no artistic ability to participate in Zentangle meditation. I will provide instruction and materials for Zentangle meditation during our scheduled Meditation Maintenance Sessions (Friday, June 13 and Wednesday, June 18). I will need a definite RSVP if you plan on attending, since I need a count for materials.

Taking Mindfulness on the Road
la-traffic-cars.jpg

I enjoyed the article, Three Ways to Drive Less Distractedly, by Jeff Greenwald which appears in the August issue of Mindful magazine.  I especially liked Jeff's first suggestion, to play the "right to be wrong" mindful driving game with yourself each time you get into your car. The essence of this challenge is to allow the first five drivers you encounter each day to make a mistake while driving, after #5 you can vent all you want with #6, #7 etc. I'm going to give this a try!  Let me know how the mindful driving game works for you.
A Short Guide to a Happy Life

'Tis the season of commencements. Over a decade ago I first read Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Quindlen's commencement speech which she wrote for the graduates of Villanova University in 2000. Unfortunately, Anna Quindlen never delivered the commencement address at Villanova because there were threats of protests directed at Ms. Quindlen's well-known liberal political views. She declined to give the address because as she said at the time, "I don't think you should have to walk through demonstrators to get to your college commencement."

Their loss became our gain however, because after the commencement address that never happened, Anna Quindlen published the speech as the book "A Short Guide to a Happy Life". It has become one of my favorite gifts to give to new grads. Sending them off into adulthood with the wisdom of noticing the moments...a true treatise of mindfulness.
