Rita Charon: Honoring the Stories of Illness
| |
Dr. Rita Charon is a pioneer in the field of narrative medicine -- honoring the stories of illness. She has been a great inspiration to me as I have researched how we communicate the experience of chronic pain and illness through blogging -- a type of narrative with a social component. I had the great pleasure of learning from Dr. Charon this month during the Narrative Medicine Workshop at Columbia University in New York City. As we narrative medicine participants gathered, from various countries and health care disciplines, a common thread emerged, so eloquently articulated by Dr. Charon ..."our heads were touching by telling and listening to the stories of self." Renew your resiliency and hope for the health care system by listening to this wonderful TEDTalk by Rita Charon.

Healthy Heart Month
| |
February is the perfect month to bring awareness to both the metaphorical heart with feelings of love and friendship and also to the physical heart -- that muscle in our chests that keeps us alive and kicking. As you may know stress and how we perceive stressors in our lives have direct effects on the heart and cardiovascular system. This month I was asked to write a blog post about women's heart health for Comprehensive EAP; be sure to check out the heart healthy tips in the blog post (and the video clip starring Elizabeth Banks) by clicking here.
