2014 Women Build events come to a successful close!

In July, over 50 dedicated women volunteers worked in Sea Bright and Union Beach for our 2014 Women Build week. The Women Build event was the first for our newly merged Habitat for Humanity in Monmouth affiliate. It came just a month after we celebrated the Women Build Fashion Show and Luncheon honoring the Jersey Strong Foundation, American Red Cross, the Wells Fargo Housing Foundation and Volunteer of the Year, Evangelia Papamarkou.

The all-women volunteer crews were lead by construction leaders Melissa Beaver and Sandra Larsen, both of whom are seasoned construction team leads. The Sea Bright and Union Beach worksites saw significant progress during the week, despite being at different stages of new home construction. Both homeowners, single mothers with teenage sons, lost their homes to Superstorm Sandy in October 2012. In 2013, Habitat in Monmouth partnered with these families to rebuild their homes in their respective communities.

"We have been anxious to do a Women Build event since our last event in 2012 was cancelled due to Superstorm Sandy," says Nancy Doran, board president for Habitat for Humanity in Monmouth County.  "Our community has been overwhelming with their support, we are blessed to have dedicated female volunteers that are excited to get their hands dirty and help our homeowners," she added.  "To have 50 women on a build site is incredible, we know next year's event will be even bigger."

A special thanks to everyone that made this possible, including our generous sponsors and supporters! For more pictures and media coverage of this year's Women Build events, please visit www.habitatmonmouth.org

As part of their summer tour, OAR and Phillip Phillips partnered with Habitat for Humanity to raise funds to help families in need of affordable housing. During their 2014 joint summer tour, the artists donated $1 from every ticket sold, to Habitat for Humanity and provided tickets to each of the tour stops' local affiliate. Two of our Sandy partner families and representatives from Habitat in Monmouth had the pleasure of being special guests of each band backstage at the PNC Bank Arts Center during the July concert. We extend our sincerest gratitude to both Phil Phillips and OAR for their generosity and support of our mission and our homeowners!

A special thank you to volunteer guru, Kate Nelson!

Kate with Phil Phillips

Since February 2013, Kate Nelson has been every volunteer's go to girl for all things Habitat in Monmouth! Since taking the reigns as Volunteer Coordinator, she has been the affiliate's point of contact for our generous group and corporate volunteers to our countless individual volunteers among a laundry list of other assorted projects. Without Kate's dedication and hard work - including coordinating the affiliate's participation in the Carter Work Project and Hammers for Habitat build in Times Square - our affiliate would not be where it is today! It is with heavy heart that we share Kate has decided to move on from her post as Volunteer Coordinator to dedicate more time to her family. However, like everyone who's caught the "Habitat" bug, we are glad Kate will remain involved as the chair of the A Brush With Kindness program at Habitat in Monmouth.

"Kate is an amazing asset to any organization and has been instrumental in getting our organization where it is today, while we are sad to see her leave as a staff member, we are thrilled she will remain involved in our organization and in delivering our mission," says Ray Gabler, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity in Monmouth.

From the board, staff and the legions of volunteers we extend a special THANK YOU to Kate for all her contributions to Habitat for Humanity in Monmouth County.

We are pleased to welcome seasoned Habitat veteran, Lori Schneider to our team as the new Volunteer Coordinator, if you're interested in volunteering you can reach out to her at lschneider@habitatmonmouth.org or visit our website
