GALYNG! TO GIVE OR NOT TO GIVE?
Caricature by Merjen Gylyjewa
Every young Turkmen man has something to say about galyng or perhaps complain about the growing price of getting married and the ever expanding list of goods one has to provide as a dowry to the bride's family. It is a very complex system involving many family members in prolonged negotiations.

What is the role of galyng in family relationships? What are its psychological effects?  Does it make family ties stronger? Does it undermine the bride's authority in a new family? Or does this tradition humiliate a bride and increase her dependency on her husband?

Please take some time to reflect and comment on this important tradition and share with your friends. If you know of any sociological, psychological studies on this tradition, or similar traditions practiced in other cultures, please share them with the Saglyk community.
