Fall 2013
TURKMENISTAN HEALTH INITIATIVE
Dear Friend,

On October 25, 2013 Saglyk turned three! Interested and caring individuals have been supporting the initiative through their individual actions: reading the blogs regularly, commenting on them and sharing the resource with their networks. Many thanks for being a part of this community effort to address complex societal issues and develop constructive engagement around them. Numerically speaking, the initiative developed 360 blog posts on various health topics, translated and adapted two comprehensive public health manuals, developed four informational pamphlets with specific and culturally sensitive public health messages, answered 343 questions from the website visitors and 428 people commented on blog posts. We hope more people will discover and use these resources in the coming years.

  1. In May 2013, the website launched a public forum, a space to discuss important societal issues. The first four questions were concerning views on sex before marriage, homosexuality and society, the role of traditional healers and their growing popularity, and how to decrease the number of abortions in Turkmen society.
  2. The following blog posts have generated most of the comments from website visitors in recent months:
(1) How the doctor-patient relationship should be: a Turkmen doctor reflects on the current state of affairs
(2) Informational pamphlet on water and sanitation
(3) Life of the society: why do girls and women become prostitutes?
(4) Sinus infection: symptoms, treatment, complications and prevention
(5) Facts about domestic violence
(6) Are plastic products bad for you?
(7) Alcohol poisoning: definition, symptoms and first aid
(8) Anemia: the role of nutrition and medicines
The number of questions from website visitors has been growing steadily. We receive 25-35 questions every week from the public. The project is inviting caring and creative doctors and medical professionals with Turkmen language proficiency to join our team. The job details are coming soon to the website. Please help us serve the Turkmen public by connecting us to interested individuals.
