Dear  ,

As we come to the end of an academic year, we always have feelings of both joy and sorrow. We may feel happy looking back on our successes throughout the year yet sad about saying goodbye to colleagues and students for the summer. In this issue of the RAKTN newsletter, we look back on another semester of successful professional development programs and to plans for the future. Check out our interview with one of Ras Al Khaimah's math teachers and learn about the Ras Al Khaimah Teacher Exchange Program's recent exploration of the Malaysian education system through the eyes of one of your colleagues. Finally, don't forget to check out our Teaching Tips, and follow us on Twitter for Ras Al Khaimah and education news. All of us at the RAKTN team wish you all a restful and well-deserved holiday with friends and family.

Warm regards,
Luke Zimmermann, Program Manager for Teaching and Learning

SCHOOL NEWS Schools

Ghalila Primary School

As part of its Behavioral Awareness project, Ghalila Primary School organized an event called "Basmati Entma'a wa Sharaf" in order to protect public properties by instilling value for these spaces among students. The goal is to enhance the preservation of community and school facilities because these spaces belong to community members and should be maintained by them.

In addition, Ghalila's cycle 2 program organized a self-management project for a full day, during which students led the school under the supervision of the school management. Students took on the roles of the school principal, assistant principal, and social worker, among others. The aim of this project is to instill leadership methods and skills in students. Under the supervision of Vice Principal Mr. Saeed Ahmed Rabba, the project was a success.

Al Nakheel Primary School

On April 27, 2015, Sheikha Al Mahri, an Islamic teacher, offered a training course entitled "Educational Games." Students from the Higher Colleges of Technology and Ittihad University attended the course, which introduced the features of the games; their objectives, types, and samples of the games; and how to employ them in the school curriculum. Ms. Al Mahri effectively managed the session, and awards were distributed to the wining teams.

Al Rams Secondary School

On May 11, 2015, Al Rams Secondary School held a seminar called "An Hour of Brainstorming," which was assessed by the Ras Al Khaimah Educational Zone. Brainstorming encourages creative thinking and has the potential to generate a great number of problem-solving ideas in a limited amount of time for those who are brainstorming. This seminar also included discussions about teacher qualifications and skills, the school environment, motivating staff, special needs, students activities, student behavior, academic achievement, and parental involvement.

Shamal Primary and Secondary School

Shamal Primary and Secondary School is pleased to have hosted Ms. Sumayya Hareb, Director of the Ras Al Khaimah Educational Zone, to celebrate the school's open house event, at which Ms. Hareb delivered a welcoming speech. During the event, the school organized various competitions, focused on culture and sports, between parents and students, in order to encourage parental involvement in the school. At the end of the open house, gifts and certificates were distributed to active parents and participants.

If you would like to share your favorite teaching tips, please email them to

Teaching English, Promoting Virtue: The Mini-Washing Machine

When teaching students about clothing, I converted foam coolers into miniature washing machines for each group of children in my class. Students got the chance to use their English vocabulary while they were pretending to help their mothers do the laundry. I also took this opportunity to use these moments to remind students of how lucky they are to have a roof that shelters them, a mother who takes care of them, and a country that cares for every individual. The teaching tip here is to create a daily life context and to communicate to students a purpose for practicing their language skills while promoting community morals so that, as teachers, we don't become so busy teaching them knowledge that we forgetting to instill humanitarian sparkles in them.
