Welcome to the first RAKTN newsletter of 2015! We hope you're enjoying a great start to the New Year. In this edition, you can read about how our teachers award event this December took a bold approach to more traditional ceremonies, bringing an interactive and collaborative spirit to the celebration. As a new semester of professional development training now begins, we're excited to add three new courses to our offerings, including one related to improving parents' involvement with their students. In other course news, we've implemented a new attendance policy in order to maximize the productivity of our workshops. Throughout this semester, the competition for best teaching tips will continue, and you can get to know a pair of dynamic teaching sisters through this quarter's Teacher Feature. Innovative Award Ceremony Draws Positive Response

As participation in the Al Qasimi Foundation's professional development courses has increased over the last five years, the Teaching and Learning department realized that a traditional awards ceremony was no longer appropriate for Ras Al Khaimah's group of professionals. The educators who take part in these courses are dynamic and accomplished, and, this fall, the Foundation decided to host an awards ceremony that reflected these attributes.

Teaching Tips: A Competition for All Teachers

If you would like to share your favorite teaching tips, please email them to [email protected] to be entered in this year's competition. Results for the best teaching tips will be announced in June 2015. Take a look at one example from a local educator below:

Designed Alliance with Your Students:

In order to identify a particular topic that I want to discuss with my students, I take certain steps at the beginning of the school year and during different periods in the academic year. The issue for discussion may be related to a students' academic performance or behavior at school, their future plans, or another important topic.

I thought about a way that the students can share their points of view freely and openly. So, I start by distributing a piece of paper to the students, and I ask them to write for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, I collect the papers and later read them at home. Then I choose one topic that the students suggested and set a date to discuss the topic with the students. We focus on a different topic during each discussion. This experience produced the following results:

1.    Students learned thinking skills.

2.    Students learned how to evaluate their behavior and categorize it as positive or negative.

3.    The exercise built a bridge of trust and understanding between students and the teacher.

4.    The students felt they were important and there was someone there to support them.

5.    It promoted positive behavior through counseling, mentoring, and listening.

6.    The students felt the importance of the role of the teacher in their lives.

7.    This exchange changed students' behavior, and they became more responsible.
