English Teacher

School name:
Al Hamham Secondary School for girls
How long have you worked in education?
21 years

What are some of your favourite experiences of teaching in RAK?

When I first started teaching at Osama bin Zaid Primary School for Boys I had trouble dealing with the grade one boys and teaching having to teach four subjects in English. However, after I had taught them for a while I began to love them and they loved me too. I taught them for a year and a half but I had to returned back to Al Hamham Secondary School. Now those boys are in grade five and I still miss and remember them.

In three sentences describe your dream school.

- An attractive learning environment that provides psychological comfort for teachers and learners

- Equipped with all the requirements of modern techniques which open to the teacher and the learner a wide perspectives of knowledge and science

- School where there are no school bags, where the curricula, exercises and duties are loaded on iPads.

Why is RAK Teachers' Network useful?

Through the network we can share experiences and important topics with peers and colleagues, as well as finding out about the latest news and updates from training sessions and workshops,. In turn, I inform my school about network news.

Why do you recommend that other teachers should join?

Being a member of the network gives you the opportunity keep up with the latest events on offer and to get involved. It also offers useful topics for discussion which can be helpful as you in your work as a teacher.

If you have a really great colleague you'd like to nominate for the Teacher Feature, just let us know. Send a message to Marwah

Discussion Highlights
A great way to share and receive ideas, links and resources with your colleagues on RAK Teachers' Network is to start a discussion. Here are a few discussions you might like to get involved in. Feel free to leave a comment or post a link.
Al Qasimi Foundation has posted a discussion highlighting the Detoxifying School Accountability report published by the think tank DEMOS. The report takes aim at the target-driven accountability in the English education system: principally, the Ofsted inspection regime, tests and school league tables. The argument of this report is that this has proved profoundly toxic, damaging trust between staff, pupils, parents and policy makers, leading to adverse outcomes for students. Follow the link to the DEMOS website where you can download the report for free.
Mahmoud Rashad has posted a discussion about his blog, Islamic RAK. Mahmoud's blog won first prize for educational blogs in Ras Al Khaimah. Check out the discussion and then leave your comments for Mahmoud and share your blog.
Fathia has posted a discussion entitled 'Where can I find more resources in good teaching?' Check out the discussion and share new and good resources to help Fathia and the others to read more about teaching 15-year-olds.

The 'Schools' Online' session delivered by Priya Nandagopal from the British Council on the 20th of May. Priya spoke about Connecting Classrooms program, which offers school partnerships and accreditation along with professional development courses for educators and a chance for them to share best practice with international counterparts. Priya also spoke about the benefits of having international school partnerships and demonstrated the new British Council School Online website and its various tools. At the end, she presented a brief introduction to the International School Award.

On Sunday 12 May the participants from the Action Research 2 course presented their researching findings. Over the last semester, 4 groups have been attending the workshops, at the Al Qasimi Foundation, to work on implementing proposed research solutions from their original projects and monitoring and evaluating their success. The groups have worked extremely hard on these projects, which include topics such as: Integrating hyperactive students into classroom activities, the impact of a collective heuristic program on academic achievement and the impact of reading strategies on students' achievements. Read more about their research projects here.
