We find ourselves at the very height of summer-I hope you are enjoying it as much as I. Speaking for myself, I'm glad that, for the time being at least, the 100 degree plus temperatures are over. Independence Day and all the ceremonies surrounding it were joyous, festive, fun and loud--at last all our pets can come out from under the bed!
Last weekend we had the 58th year of the
Tevis Cup and with it an event that spans the 5th District and much of what it has to offer. This is an event I look forward to each year as a volunteer with the Native Sons of the Golden West, Auburn Chapter.
The race begins in the cool mountains at Robie Park near Northstar, crosses the beautiful Truckee River between Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley, summits the majestic crest of the Sierra Nevada at Squaw's High Camp and continues along the Western States Trail through such historic spots as Lyon Ridge, Cougar Rock, Robinson Flat, Last Chance, Deadwood, Michigan Bluff, the town of Foresthill, the Mountain Quarries Railroad Bridge (AKA "No Hands Bridge") at the North Fork of the American River crossing, finally ending at the finish line at the beautiful Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn.
Whether you ride, crew, or watch, it's an event not to be missed! Here is a link to the many fascinating communities and sights the trail follows:
(

When you finally arrive in Auburn, there are a multitude of other events and opportunities to eat, drink and participate in the culture unique to our beautiful Foothills Region. This year I was fortunate enough see the event up close at High Camp in Squaw Valley and then the finish at the Canyon Overlook in Auburn. I was able to attend the Haggin Cup judging (the best conditioned horse of the top 10 finishers) and awards festivities the next day. You can check out the Auburn Journal's coverage of the event at
Be inspired by this amazing race and these amazing athletes - get out there, enjoy the summer and see you on the trail!
As always, if Jocelyn, Steve or I can be of help, please let us know.
