From the Principal's Desk
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends,
Mother Teresa said, "Never become so sad that you forget the joy of the resurrection!" The resurrection is the event which brings rejoicing to every aspect of our lives. We know that no matter what we suffer or what we enjoy, it is all going to find its fulfillment in Christ who overcame sin and death, and all its consequent suffering. The resurrection is the decisive reality which gives credence to everything Jesus Christ did and taught. No one has ever risen from the dead by his own power before, or since. This affirms the divinity of Jesus Christ, and that all He has promised us, He is able to deliver: life without end, life in the Trinity, adoption by God the Father, that all things will be made new, that justice will prevail in the end, except where mercy triumphs over it. While we struggle to understand the meaning of our lives, the pain we suffer in relationships, the tragedy of widespread impoverishment both spiritual and physical, this one event in history gives hope that all will be well. It will not be accomplished in our way, not within our time schedule, but according to God's great wisdom, goodness, and providence. It is in conforming our lives to this pattern, in accepting God's will and surrendering patiently with Him (Do you not think He is ready to put an end to the evil about us? He is waiting patiently for conversions, for salvation of souls, and even St. Paul says that what we suffer now is "nothing" compared to the glory which we will enjoy eternally) that we will grow in wisdom and understanding. To see the world as God sees is, - that is true wisdom, for that is reality. To gain this wisdom requires knowing and living the teachings of Jesus Christ. May we receive every grace and blessing of understanding of God's goodness, and enjoy every spiritual and temporal consolation that God has prepared to give us this Easter season!
With prayers for your families,
Sister Dominic

May 23rd: Faith Day is less than a month away. Faith Day is a day set aside in the school year to learn more about who we are as Christians and how to celebrate that. Encountering Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament and learning about His teachings, makes us better disciples. Living His teachings in service to others makes us better apostles. This is what Faith Day is about: discipleship and apostleship. This year's theme is "I have chosen you" based on the Gospel reading for May 23rd. Students will spend the day in mixed age groups, led by a teacher/catechist. They will have activities, prayer, and fellowship throughout the day. Faith Day is often a highlight of the year for all of our children. If you were here last year, please pull out your child's faith day t-shirt, which reads Duc in Altum. We will use the same shirts as last year. For students who are new, we will purchase shirts for their inaugural Faith Day. Parents are asked to make a suggested donation of $5-$7 per t-shirt to defray this expense. Volunteer help is needed for Faith Day for adults to serve as assistant catechists in the classrooms. Please email Mrs. Tucker at ctucker@olmc-school.com if you are available on May 23rd to volunteer by assisting in a classroom, or by spending time in adoration in the gym. If you would like an adult t-shirt, please let Mrs. Tucker know that asap. If you would like to help with any prior set up and logistics, please contact Sister Dominic at principal@olmc-school.com. If you would like to help set up and procure for the intended service projects, please contact Mrs. Steigerwald at dsteigerwald@olmc-school.com.
June 6th: End of Year Raffle Drawing for ONE YEAR'S FREE TUITION AND FEES!!!! New this year, Our Lady of Mount Carmel School is raffling off one year's free tuition for the 2014-2015 school year, including general fees. A limited number of tickets will be printed, not to exceed 275 tickets, making your chances 1 in 275 or BETTER if you purchase more than one ticket! There are just over 200 families in the school currently. Tickets are $100 each and will be available beginning Friday, May 2, 2014 and can be purchased through the front office. Good luck!
Through May 23rd: If you have been at Mass over the past few weeks and months, and if you attended any of the informational sessions at the parish or the school for the Capital Campaign, you are aware that OLMC Parish/School is involved in a diocesan-wide capital campaign. Each parish will participate over the next two years; OLMC was invited to participate in the pilot round knowing that our parish will be successful and will serve as a wonderful example. The School is benefitting greatly from the campaign as well. Many of our children have sat in rooms, or played in the gym where areas were "off limits" on rainy days due to a leaking roof. The School Board has been preparing to replace the roof for several years, and the campaign will enable us to do that in a more timely manner. Additionally, the needs for an athletic field have continually emerged through the years, and we are looking to acquire additional land to serve as a field, or if this does not come to fruition, we will enhance our current field to meet better playing conditions both for recess and the athletic program. These are items that will benefit everyone in the school. The fifth grade students have taken a leadership role within the lower school to explain the campaign to our children. The school's and the children's first contribution to the campaign is prayer. While the children's coins will not necessarily make a dent in the 2.3 million dollar goal, their prayers will open the hearts of those who are able to donate, support and strengthen those working on the campaign, and bring down blessings on the entire endeavor. God hears and loves the prayers of children, and this is our primary part in the campaign. Children in the lower grades have written prayers that we have begun praying each morning for its success. Today's prayer from 4A ended with "Please help us to use all these new gifts for your glory, God." Wow - our little fourth graders have it right! Beautiful!! Secondarily, the children are collecting coins in a central spot as a visible reminder of a school-wide effort, which will both draw the school together as a unity working toward a worthwhile goal, and also begin to form children in the ways of stewardship which is an essential teaching of Christianity. The emphasis is not on the amount of money collected in the coin collection, and for this reason, we are not projecting a goal to work toward. It may be important to note that children tend to want to give all when they believe in a cause and they may ask you to break open their piggy banks, or cash in their bonds. This is a good and Christian response - give ALL to God. However, before breaking open their piggy banks, you may want to talk with them about donating to the cause and what would be a sacrificial gift. For children, it could be one dollar or just a few dollars if they earn a small allowance for chores around the house. Others might search under cushions in the car or in the family room. Whatever they give, it is an exercise in stewardship and is gratefully appreciated. We ask that you and your family pray daily for the success of the campaign. Our donors have been more than generous and we are well on our way to our goal.
Mr. Ron Gorman has undertaken a project to repair the auction and art trailers which were leaking and causing damage inside the rooms. He has replaced the back side and is working inside on the flooring and walls. It is a large project, and we would be grateful for any Dads, Knights, or handy friends, who would like to gain service hour by giving some time to this project. Mr. Gorman works weekdays and weekends. If you are available to help him, or would like to find out what is needed, you can email him at patron422@verizon.net. Thanks for considering giving your time to this.
Grandparents Day - please notify grandparents to save the date for May 2nd at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School.
FYI - before purchasing the polo for next year's uniform wear, please be aware that there will be a change in the logo. Current year shirts and logos will be grandfathered in to save on expense. The only piece of uniform clothing that should be affected is the polo. This is a very exciting change, and there will be more information forthcoming, but it is important for you to know to expect a new logo on orders.
A letter with regard to Bingo for next year will be forthcoming. You will have the opportunity, as in years past, to select the dates best for your family to serve. There will also be some hardship alternatives available.
