From the Principal's Desk
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends of Our Lady of Mount Carmel,
This year Presidents' Day was celebrated with great ceremony at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Not only did the students come to school on the national holiday this year (as the first snow make up day!), but we had our first President, Mr. George Washington, in our midst this week. One of our parents assumes the persona of Mr. Washington during this month of February, and goes into schools to teach and deliver points of the curriculum from George Washington's perspective. He is "in character" the entire day from refusing to shake hands, as this was not customary in his day, to eating lunch with his archaic utensils. He is suited up from head to toe in clothing from the time, and he held the children spellbound in their classes throughout the day. Many tips and trivia dropped from his lips as incidental lessons in the hallways, not least of which was the fact that if children failed to address their elders with "sir" or "madam" they would be liable to severe punishment. Many wide eyes stared in disbelief! It was good to have a Founding Father with us, to remember on what virtue, strength and valor our country was formed, and to make every effort to reignite these virtues in ourselves and in our children, deepening their knowledge of the necessity of personal, heroic virtue and a real education in citizens of a republic. This virtue, however, is hard won through years of practice, self-denial, and many conversations, and a true vision of the greatness for which we are made. I am grateful for our partnership and efforts in the formation of our children - becoming strong citizens of a great republic who are aiming to be citizens of heaven.
I look forward to seeing many of you at the Volunteer Reception following Mass this Friday and also at the upcoming Chili Cook off on Saturday, March 1st. Thanks for all you do and all you bring to our community. It is a privilege and a gift for me to be part of it!
With prayers for your families,
Sister Dominic
