Technology in the Classroom

Mrs. Thames's 3rd grade Art Class studied Origami. The class used an App on the iPads to follow along and make wonderful 3-D art creations. The older students caught the origami bug and used the App as well. "Hooray for the iPads, Apple TV's, and Projectors," says Mrs. Thames.

Dear Parents and Friends of OLMC School,

Happy New Year and Happy Epiphany, or Little Christmas.  You may recall that one of my favorite stories in Scripture is the Epiphany story when the magi traversed strange lands, following a star, to bring gifts to the Christ Child in Bethlehem.  There is so much for meditation in this story - the wisdom of the magi to know the worth of following that star wherever it took them, over lands that were difficult to travel and through many dangers.  What they sought, or rather Who they sought, was worth every difficulty faced along the way.  The magi left a world where they were esteemed and renowned for their learning and societal position - again to find that Someone who transcends differences of cultures, and calls all hearts to Himself.  But perhaps my favorite line that we heard in last Sunday's gospel is that, after they came and worshipped and placed their gifts before the Infant Christ, they "returned home by another way."  There are (at least) two important teachings here for us to ponder: first, God called the magi right where they were.  He didn't require that they know and understand all the teachings of the Jewish prophets whom He had sent in previous centuries, or that they understand the mystery of the Trinity or even the Incarnation.  But He met them in the stars which had long been the object of their study.  He adapted Himself to their way of knowing in order to draw them to Himself.  This is a God who wants to be known by His creatures, who wants to share His love, and who is willing to adapt Himself to our weakness in order to share Himself.  We can examine ourselves - Do we respond to God's call to us right where we are?  Do we leave behind what seems like our security, in order to following Him wherever He leads?  Do we respond quickly, with faith, with courage and boldness?  Do we bring others with us?  A whole caravan of travelers on the way to Christ?  Do we imitate this Godliness in adapting ourselves to the needs of others?  (Not enable!  Not indulge!  Adapt!)  Does the weakness of others draw out our compassion and support?

And the second point, which I cannot neglect, is that the very meaning of phrase "they returned home by a different way."  The magi encountered the Christ Child - God come to earth in our human flesh - and were changed by that encounter.  They traveled by a different way.  Every time we encounter God we are changed and must travel by a different way.  God asks a lot, because He gives a lot.  He knows what glory awaits us if we but follow Him.  St. Paul tells us there is no suffering so great on earth that the glory that awaits us does not obliterate the memory of any suffering.  Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned on man what God has prepared for those who love Him.  The story of the magi is our example to follow - to seek God, to leave behind what weighs us down when traveling, and to allow ourselves to encounter Him with such faith and love, that we learn to travel by a different way.

Let us, by our words, by our prayers, by our sacrifices, by our love, lead others to encounter Christ who so longs to share God's very life and love with His children.

With prayers or your families,

Sister Dominic
