Let's hear it for Technology!

So many students are benefiting from the purchase of the iPads, last year's Fund an Item. First, a heartfelt thank you to all who helped to make this a reality.

The use of technology in the Music classes have brought a new dimension to classroom instruction.  Students are projecting notes with the iPads and composing music! What a sense of accomplishment the students are gaining as they can more closely relate to the composers discussed in class.

In PreK - 2nd grade, the students use keynote to change the words of a song and project the new lyrics for all to sing.  In 3rd grade the students were able compare different versions of Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saens, as the classes watched the Venezuelan Youth Orchestra perform the piece as well as a few other versions. Students then and used Google earth to see where each performance took place and where each composer originated.  This week the 7th and 8th graders will be using garage band to create an arrangement after we learned about arrangements and covers of songs and compared versions of popular covers with the original versions, for example Judy Garland's Somewhere Over the Rainbow with Iz Kamakawiwo'ole's.

Dear Parents and Friends of OLMC School,

We are very near the end of the first trimester.  This weekend and/or next weekend, when you have report cards in hand, will be a good time to sit down with each of your children to reflect on how the beginning of the year has gone.  There are many success stories which need to be shared and enjoyed together.  There are also areas of study which call for greater growth and responsibility.  It is good to have a discussion about what went well and needs to be continued, and what needs support, improvement, or an outright change in approach. The new trimester ahead is a good time to set new goals (academic, spiritual, and moral/behavioral) and implement supports to ensure your child can reach them.

This past week a special conference on "Families" was held in Rome.  Pope Francis I spent time with those at the conference and delivered an address to the families gathered there.  The crux of his address was that families are meant to be places of deep joy, emanating from deep faith and the welcome presence of God.  He challenged families, asking them to answer in their hearts, this question: "How are things when it coms to joy at home? Is there joy in your family?" He goes on to say "dear families, you know very well that the true joy which we experience in the family is not superficial; it does not come from material objects, from the fact that everything seems to be going well...True joy comes from a profound harmony between persons, something which we all feel in our hearts and which makes us experience the beauty of togetherness, of mutual support along life's journey.  But the basis of this feeling of deep joy is the presence of God and his love, which is welcoming, merciful, and respectful toward all" particularly the young and the elderly.  Pope Francis also reminded, and challenged these good families gathered around him, to never forget three foundational words which should flow quickly from each member of the family, when appropriate: "Please, thank you, and sorry."  Perhaps for Advent your family can renew the practice of saying these words to each member of the family - sibling to sibling, parent to child, and child to parent.

With prayers for your families,

Sister Dominic
