From the Principal's Desk
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends,
We are in the midst of back to back to back solemnity Sundays in the liturgical calendar. Last Sunday we celebrated Pentecost, this coming Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, and the following Sunday, the great Solemnity of Corpus Christ, the Body and Blood of Christ.
Saint Paul writes a great line in his letter to the Ephesians expressing that he humbles himself before the Father "from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named". This divinely inspired word gives us insight into the source and meaning of the human family on earth. The human family is rooted in the Holy Trinity, the Father being the First Person of Trinity. For those blessed parents who are raising children and living a family life, you image to the world, the holy (yes, holy) familial relationships that are rooted in love. Perhaps you will tell me that you don't always feel this way about your family. Fair enough. We live in a fallen world, after all. But it is the truth - the human family is rooted in and designed according to the self-gift and life-giving, total love of the three Persons of the Trinity. And even if we cannot achieve this perfection of supernatural love every day, it is our goal and our purpose. It is in the constant giving of self to our immediate family members - our community - which enables us to become like God. Acting in love, giving ourselves in love is both the imitation of God, and the happy fulfillment of our entire lives. When you attend Mass this weekend and you hear the beautiful prayers and songs whose language reflects the truth of the Trinity, listen for a line or a phrase or a whole prayer that captures some part of the life of the Trinity, and begin anew intentionally to root your family in that same life and love.
With prayers for your blessed family,
Sister Dominic

OLMC School is partnering with Newport News Parks and Rec to offer a summer full of week-long, themed summer camps. Students from OLMC and from the parish and wider community are invited to join us for a summer of fun and academic enrichment. Very happily, we have learned that one of the site superivisors assigned this summer to OLMC will be one of our alumni, Christopher Ohlhaver! See advertisement below to register online. Registration ends on June 7th.
In an effort to provide challenges, activities, and leadership opportunities appropriate to the middle school age students, we have invited Newport News Parks and Rec to facilitate our rising middle school field day this year. This is in response to widespread student and parent feedback from previous year's field days, and based on a survey sent out in the last school year. Like retreat and camp programs, NN Parks and Rec specializes in activities that encourage team building and help leadership skills emerge in students who don't fit the stereotypical "take charge" leadership style, all in an atmosphere of fun. In the past the vast majority of students paid for a field day t-shirt. The fee this year is not for a t-shirt, but for the staffing fee for the Parks and Rec service.
Released today from the Office of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Richmond , is a statement on the change of grading scale which is to be implemented in all Diocesan schools for the 2013-2014 school year. The letter does refer you to your principal if you have questions, but please also know that I plan to address it in the State of the Union OLW as well as at Back to School nights in late summer.
Below is the news release in full:
May 22, 2013
The Office of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Richmond will be instituting a Diocesan-wide change in the grading scale which will be adopted by all Diocesan Catholic schools for the 2013-14 school year. The grading scale will move from an 8 point to a 10 point scale (see below) where an A is 90-100; B is 80-89, etc. The change has been considered and researched for the past year due to several concerns brought up by principals throughout our diocese. First, the vast majority of Virginia schools, both private and public, are on or moving towards a 10 point scale. Our Catholic elementary and high school students are competing with these same students for entrance into many of the same schools and four year universities; however, public/private students' grades often reflect lower GPA's because we use a much higher grading scale. Thus, putting our students at a disadvantage. In order to showcase the academic excellence of our students and place them on a level playing field in a competitive market, we are authorizing this change. By no means does this mean it is any easier to achieve an A, B, or C in our schools. The hard work that has always been demanded by our schools' highly academic environments will not change. The same requirements it takes to get an A or A- or a B or B-, etc., will not change. The GPA, however, especially for our high school students, will place them on or above the same level as those students from all over the Diocese and the state. Should you have any concerns regarding this change in scale, please contact your principal.

A Message from the Clinic Plan Ahead for 2013-2014!
Attention Parents of PreK Students!
VA State Law requires that all children have a new physical done prior to the start of kindergarten. Physicals done for PreK are not acceptable for kindergarten. The form can be submitted to school as soon as it is completed, but must be submitted prior to the start of Kindergarten. Please plan ahead if your child has a physical scheduled this spring. Doctor's offices tend to be very busy at the end of summer. Have your doctor complete the State of VA School Entrance Physical Form, which is available on our school website or please call the clinic, and Mrs. Gounley will send one home with your child. __________________________________________
Attention Parents
of 5th Grade Students!
Please make sure that your student has their DPT booster shot prior to the start of 6th grade in August. State law requires that all students be sent home if this record is not on file by the first day of school. The DPT booster is generally given when a child turns 11 years old. If your child has a physical scheduled spring spring or summer, please talk with your doctor regarding any immunizations they may need. Doctor's offices get very busy in August prior to the start of the school year, so please plan ahead. Forms can be turned into the clinic as soon as your child gets the booster shot. Also, please make sure you keep a copy for your own records.
State required immunizations are generally available free at your local health department. For more information, please call the Peninsula Health Department at 757-594-7410, the Hampton Health Department at 757-727-1140 or the Suffolk Health Department at 757-686-4900. __________________________________________
For more information, please visit our website and click on the Parent Life tab. If you have any questions, please call the school clinic at 757-596-2754, ext. 215.
