From the Principal's Desk
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends,
Come, Holy Spirit! This Sunday we celebrate anew the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. At the first Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles in "tongues of fire" and they all began to speak in various languages. The Holy Spirit gave the gifts that belonged to their mission to go out into the world, bringing the gospel of Christ to every person. Language was not to be a barrier that the Spirit could not overcome. In our own lives, there are obstacles to spreading the gospel in word and deed, to fulfilling our mission. Perhaps we have not even considered the mission the Holy Spirit has prepared for us, or we fear the magnitude of the obstacles. There are, in fact, many obstacles, both interior and exterior. Interiorly we put up obstacles to the working of God, afraid of the sacrifices and the changes of life that conversion requires. Exteriorly we find obstacles in our culture that promote a life too busy to think, pray, or be alone with God. We live in a culture where people live as though God does not exist. (Of course this is in direct correlation to the increasing number of depressed people, even at a young age. Faith brings joy! But this is for another day). The Holy Spirit is ready to provide the healing and gifts that overcome these apparent obstacles. As we look ahead toward the weeks and months of vacation which await us, we do well to remember that the Holy Spirit is the greatest of all tour guides. He guides us safely through this life of pilgrimge, taking us to all the best sights, enjoying the best food (yes, the Eucharist), and meeting people from all cultures. You will be given gifts in abundance to fulfill your mission, and in the end you will enjoy for all eternity the greatness of God and the fulness of love. But you must be prepared to pay the price for this tour, for it will cost you your life in service to the gospel. But never forget, God is never outdone in generosity. Do not be afraid to give Him the entirety of your life for His service. He knows the purposes for which He has created you, and to follow His will is peace.
With prayers for your families,
Sister Dominic

Congratulations to our Competitive Cupstackers who attended the Newport News Cupstack Tournament earlier this week. This is the first year any school has won the four-person relay in back to back years - Congratulations Crusader Cupstackers! The relay team consisted of BJ Diongzon, Nathan Valerio, William Robertson, and Nikki Valerio. BJ won the overall fourth grade competition as well as the overall tournament out of over 100 competitors. All placed in the final 16 in the tournament. Great job!
Please be on the lookout for an important survey coming soon. It will be sent to your email just like the OLW. |
Recently, the OLMC Honors Band participated in a music festival. This festival was an enriching experience filled with opportunities for all children to grow as musicians by learning from three talented instructors and from each other. The honors band had the opportunity to learn and play more challenging music and the chance to teach some of the other band students some new music. When these students played together, they sounded like an orchestra that had played together for awhile, rather than a group of students who had only known each other for three days. In addition, they experienced a band clinic with the Army Wind Quartet from Ft. Eustis and learned many pointers from these musicians. We would like to thank Mrs. Garcia & A.I.M.A., who are so devoted to our children and work very hard to provide these opportunities. They've done an excellent job teaching our youth the glory of music, and how these talents are God-given. It was truly beautiful!

Last week the entire school community honored our Blessed Mother with the May Crowning. The gorgeous morning was extremely joyful and beautiful as the school gathered together in celebration and song. Grandparents and special guests from all over the country joined in our celebration. Thank you to everyone that attended that day, and for all of those that worked so hard to make the day a great success.
As a token of our appreciation, the students opened their hearts and shared their voices for your enjoyment. Please visit our website: www.olmc-school.com and look under the "Parent Life" tab to download your copy of worship songs and sacred prayers.
Awe-Inspiring Musical selections include:

A Message from the Clinic Plan Ahead for 2013-2014!
Attention Parents of PreK Students!
VA State Law requires that all children have a new physical done prior to the start of kindergarten. Physicals done for PreK are not acceptable for kindergarten. The form can be submitted to school as soon as it is completed, but must be submitted prior to the start of Kindergarten. Please plan ahead if your child has a physical scheduled this spring. Doctor's offices tend to be very busy at the end of summer. Have your doctor complete the State of VA School Entrance Physical Form, which is available on our school website or please call the clinic, and Mrs. Gounley will send one home with your child. __________________________________________
Attention Parents
of 5th Grade Students!
Please make sure that your student has their DPT booster shot prior to the start of 6th grade in August. State law requires that all students be sent home if this record is not on file by the first day of school. The DPT booster is generally given when a child turns 11 years old. If your child has a physical scheduled spring spring or summer, please talk with your doctor regarding any immunizations they may need. Doctor's offices get very busy in August prior to the start of the school year, so please plan ahead. Forms can be turned into the clinic as soon as your child gets the booster shot. Also, please make sure you keep a copy for your own records.
State required immunizations are generally available free at your local health department. For more information, please call the Peninsula Health Department at 757-594-7410, the Hampton Health Department at 757-727-1140 or the Suffolk Health Department at 757-686-4900. __________________________________________
For more information, please visit our website and click on the Parent Life tab. If you have any questions, please call the school clinic at 757-596-2754, ext. 215.
