From the Principal's Desk
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends of OLMC,

As we celebrate on Friday, February 22nd the Feast of the Chair of Peter, we remember our current Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI who is making his final preparations to resign his office on the evening of February 28.  At school the children, faculty and staff are praying daily for Pope Benedict XVI who has been a gift of simplicity and clarity for the Church in the midst of deeply troubled times.  Upon his resignation we will each receive the name of a cardinal for whom to pray. The 117 cardinals who are eligible to vote for the next Pope will meet at the upcoming conclave for which the date is yet to be announced.  (The Vatican website has a great virtual tour of the Sistine Chapel where the conclave takes place; if you wish to explore you can click on the hyperlink:  Sistine Chapel).

As you know, the pope resigned because, although he is quite well in mind and spirit, his physical health has not kept pace, but he is growing weaker due to his old age.  He believes that the difficulty of our times calls for a pope who can travel, celebrate public liturgies with greater frequency, and keep a demanding schedule of meetings, which he simply cannot do.  I think it is important to know that our pope is not retiring in the sense we think of retiring from a career.  He is not saying "I've done my duty, and it's time for someone else to take the helm.  I've worked all my life and I am ready for a break."  This is a foreign concept to someone who has totally given himself to God and to His Church.  As you probably read, the Pope will live in a monastery in the Vatican Gardens where he will study and pray, and offer his daily sufferings for the Church he has loved so faithfully through all his days.

The past eight years of this Pontificate have truly culminated this year with the Year of Faith.  This Year is set aside for us to recall the work the Holy Spirit accomplished in the Second Vatican Council of 1962 and to revisit the Council documents, having courage to revise whatever changes or practices were not in accord with a faithful implementation which the Council Fathers intended.  With the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, we will lose a final historical personal tie to an era, for he was alive, and living in Germany during the Second World War; he saw firsthand the rise of atheistic nation states; he lived through the Depression which impacted most of the known world; he lived through, not just the Vatican Council II, but that entire decade known as the 60's which brought about a radical change in social, economic, political, and spiritual life.  And he's come to the brink of the age of technology ushering us into a brand new era.  Through all of his years, as popular ideas and fads came and went, Pope Benedict XVI can surely be one from whom we learn to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus!

One of the ways the parish is celebrating the Year of Faith is that Father John David is giving a lecture and discussion series on the major documents of the Second Vatican Council.  The Pope is saying that this Council is the guide for our times and for well into the future.  It is not like iPad technology that becomes outdated in a few years.  The workof the Council is relatively very young, and we have MUCH work to do.  I encourage you to attend Father's talks when you able.  The current series occurs on several Thursday evenings during Lent, at St. Michael's Hall.  Check the bulletin to confirm dates.

With prayers for your families,
Sister Dominic

OLMC Home and School's Annual Chili Cook-off, Cake Decorating and Dessert Contest!

March 2nd from 6-8pm

You can bring a crock-pot of chili, a decorated cake, or a yummy dessert (or any combination!). All guests get to vote for their favorites. For the chili, to judge them, you get to taste as many as you'd like. For the cakes and desserts, it's basically a beauty contest!

We will also provide hot dogs and drinks so that no one leaves hungry! We are collecting $5 per
family to offset costs. You will get ten tickets to use for voting for your favorites, plus one more to put your name on for the cake raffle.

Folks who plan to bring a crock-pot should "make a reservation" if they need access to electricity so that we can be sure to have enough outlets available. Please send an email to Teresa McGee at tmcgee1995@msn.com indicating desire to bring chili (please put "chili" in subject line) or a cake (please put "cake" in subject line), preferably before February 28. We can also accommodate last minute walk-ins, but we may not be able to provide electricity. Remember to bring a serving spoon!

Drops offs begin at 4:00 pm, judging open from 6 to 7pm. Help is welcome! Please volunteer-hours
count towards school requirements!

NOTE: You do not need to bring chili/cakes or desserts to attend!!! This is a Home and School
sponsored social event. Come out to have some fun!!!

Vision Screening at OLMC

Results Being Sent Home

Wednesday, Feb. 20th

Please check your student's Wednesday folder.

The Richmond Diocese received a special grant from the Bon Secours Health System, to provide vision screening in all Catholic Schools in the Diocese this year. Students in Pre-K, K, 3rd and 7th grade were screened on February 5th.

This screening was provided by the W.H.E.E.L.S. Program and Prevent Blindness Mid-Atlantic and is different than the type of screening we normally do at school. If your child was screened, their results should be in their Wednesday folder. If you do not get an envelope from your child, please ask for it, or

 contact the school nurse.

If your child did not get screened, and you have any concern about their vision and/or hearing, please feel free to contact the school nurse. We can do individual screening at any time.

Please email Mrs. Gounley at clinic@olmc-school.com
or you can call 757-596-2754, ext. 215.

The Stations of the Cross will alternate
each week between
Spanish and English as follows:
February 15th - Spanish
February 22nd - English
March 1st - Spanish
March 8th - English
March 15th - Spanish
March 22nd - English

Please join us for these evenings of fellowship and prayer. In order that our fellowship reflects the simplicity of the Lenten season, please only bring either a meatless soup or bread to share.

Thank You Parents and
Friends of OLMC School!

The Christian Service Club would like to sincerely thank everyone that gave so generously to assist the PORT guests while they were at OLMC. The Christian Service Club set a goal to collect enough food to make 100 bagged lunches for the homeless. The incredible outpouring of support from OLMC parents, students and friends, allowed the club to double their goal!

The Christian Service Club would like to share some words of gratitude that were expressed on behalf of your kindness. "Thank you all so very very much for the lunches that you prepared for our PORT guests. You organized so many different ways to bring blessings to those most poor and vulnerable among us. Your bags of treats brought them great joy. Also, they all received new socks when they checked into the shelter the day of the torrential rains and high winds. Thank you for providing us with the ability to do that."

OLMC is a beautiful community full of kindheartedness. May Christ bless you richly for the many gifts you shared with the poor.

Have you played a woodwind, brass,

percussion, violin or guitar instrument?

If so, You Are Invited!

We even have a few extra used instruments you can borrow, if needed! If you are interested, please email Mrs. Garcia at jgarcia@olmc-school.com

Annual School Auction!

Save the date for the event of the year!
A silent auction, a live auction and an evening of cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and dinner will take place in Saint Michael Hall on April 20, 2013.

Please continue to donate to the auction. What should you donate? Please look at the display in the lobby at the school for ways that you can give to the gala. On the office windows, you will find a display of top hats. Each hat features a donation idea! Please remove the hat from the glass and purchase that item. Then turn your donation in, along with the donor form.

The school auction is a wonderful way to raise money for our school to benefit our students.
It's also a great way to get involved and meet people. The Spring Auction is a tremendous fundraiser for OLMC School and an event that embraces school-wide participation.

The evening is sure to be full of donations, dining, fundraising, and fellowship! Let the fun begin!

If you have questions, please contact

Tammy (757-593-3621) or

Julie (757-876-7209).
