Give Back Rewards Success!

Congratulations to OLMC Students who far surpassed the goal of 3,000 Box Tops, Labels, and Coke Rewards.  Together we collected 12,631 Box Tops!

A special thank you to Mrs. Domzal and her many counters and clippers for organizing the competition.  The competition was two fold: a whole school goal (which we exceeded) and a grade level competition.
Results from that are:
1st place - 6th grade awarded an ice cream social
2nd place - 8th grade awarded extra recess time
3rd place - 1st grade awarded an extra candy treat

Thank you to all who contributed to our Give Backs Program. The points frequently go toward new PE equipment, academic instructional materials, and new technology to enrich our classrooms. We will have one more competition later in the spring, so keep clipping and saving!

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends,

Already the season of Lent is upon us, and the church beckons us to engage in forty days of spring cleaning for our souls.  The gospel for Ash Wednesday reminds us that persistent obstacles often overtake our best intentions in prioritizing and giving sufficient time and energy to those things that are most important in life, particularly in the spiritual life.  Lent is often referred to as a season of grace, which is something of a paradox because I think most of us think of a time of grace as something wonderful which brings us close to God, and which feels good.  Efficacious grace does bring us closer to God in significant ways, but it is often through dryness, suffering, or trial.  Why is growing closer to God often accompanied by such unpleasantness?  As we grow in desire for God and for the spiritual life, the life of the senses - those things that tickle and please us - need to be abandoned, or strictly regulated.  Thus, Jesus tells us how to do that by giving us the three pillars of growth in the Christian life:
1) prayer - in a firm and unwavering faith we believe God is who He says He is.  In prayer we surrender our way for God's ways with intelligent fidelity.
2) fasting - we believe in the primacy of the spiritual life over the physical life (but not to the detriment of the physical life - we aren't angels).  "The body makes a cruel master, but an excellent servant."  One of the effects of original sin that we continue to live with is that we seek pleasure without measure.  Physical pleasure is never fully satiated, so it has to be intelligently regulated.  This requires saying no, even to good and pleasant things, so that the spiritual powers can grow strong.  It is good to give up a particular kind of food like sweets, or salt, or fast food. It is also good to give up other ways we find pleasure, particularly anywhere that it is excessive or disproportionate to what we are doing for our intellectual and spiritual growth.
3) almsgiving - our first charity is owed to those in our family.  It is good to give money to those in distant countries, or even right here in Newport News.  It is even better to give time to serve people, especially those in need.  But it is essential that we give to our family members - our time, our affection, our attention, our apologies, and our forgiveness.  If you have not thought about what practice to do for Lent, think about giving more of yourself in your family.
I pray that for all of us the season will bring us closer to God.  Let us give Him the freedom to uproot the weeds in the gardens of our souls and to till the soil, enrich it with virtue, and plant  to seeds to bear fruit.

With prayers for your families,
Sister Dominic

AUCTION ITEMS
I would like to say a special thank you to our energetic and persevering auction team, particularly Tammy Dessoffy and Julie Nguyen who have taken on the major roles to bring the auction together. Our team has been procuring and soliciting businesses to build wonderful silent and live auction items. A few notes:

1) Please consider a contribution to your class project and/or the silent or live auction if you have not done so already.  If you need ideas you can contact Tammy Dessoffy or Julie Nguyen, or there are ideas posted in the front office.  Each year we look for 100% participation.  (The teachers are currently at 90% participation and rising).

2) Please sell your raffle tickets!  Each family received a packet of 20 tickets to sell.  Each raffle ticket is $1.00 and competes to win an iPad 2 or a nook and gift certificate.  If you are unable to sell the tickets, please return them to the school at your earliest convenience.

HI HO Silver - March 10th
Save-the-Date and shop at HI HO Silver for Mother's Day gifts, Easter gifts, birthday gifts, or for yourself!  A percentage of proceeds from this evening will benefit OLMC School Auction.  More details coming in Wednesday folders.

OLMC is Working to

Change the Next Generation

Dr. Coulson and Mr. Stephenson have teamed up to educate middle school students about valuable life lessons. They teach an elective course designed to give students a better understanding of God, themselves, their money, and how they are interrelated. The well renowned program is based on the teachings of Dave Ramsey's Generation Change. There are three strong principles that teach students to "Be" who God created them to be, "Do" more with their money, and "Go" out into the world ready to write their story. The principle "be who God created you to be" teaches students that it is not about how much money you have, rather it is more important what you do with your money. The lesson also teaches students to turn away from the economic peer pressures and plan for their financial future. The teaching "do more with your money" encourages students to strive toward making an impact on the world today. This lesson teaches students about tithing and the importance of giving both of their time and money. Students are also taught how to prioritize saving over spending, and the value of an emergency fund. Mutual fund basics, how compound interest works and balancing a checkbook are also taught. Important budgeting skills are taught and the students actively engage in the subject of wants verses needs. "Go out into the world ready to write your story" teaches students to strive for a debt-free life, work toward obtaining employment including choosing a college major and resume writing, and plan for life after school including insurance and investing.

This life skills course works to teach students valuable lessons. When asked, how has this course changed the way you think about money, one 7th grade student replied "It helped me to think more before I buy". Another 6th grade student responded, "I learned that money can be evil and the real riches are in heaven." A 7th Grader responded with excitement and said "It is interesting how fast your money can grow! This class shows the importance of a budget." This practical and valuable course uses videos, workbooks and a variety of creative hands on activities to teach students the value of money and how it relates to the teachings of Jesus. The elective Generation Change is open to all students in grades 6th-8th.

Spring Concert Opportunity

Have you played a woodwind, brass,

percussion, violin or guitar instrument?

If so, You Are Invited!

Come play with our band, violins or guitars for our spring concert, April 25th at 6:30 p.m.! We are inviting relatives, teachers, staff and friends of OLMC to come play a piece with us. The parts are easy (especially if you haven't played since you were in school) and you will get the music in plenty of time with extra help provided. We even have a few extra used instruments you can borrow, if needed! If you are interested, please email Mrs. Garcia at jgarcia@olmc-school.com

Annual School Auction!

Save the date for the event of the year!
A silent auction, a live auction and an evening of cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and dinner will take place in Saint Michael Hall on April 20, 2013.

Please continue to donate to the auction. What should you donate? Please look at the display in the lobby at the school for ways that you can give to the gala. On the office windows, you will find a display of top hats. Each hat features a donation idea! Please remove the hat from the glass and purchase that item. Then turn your donation in, along with the donor form.

The school auction is a wonderful way to raise money for our school to benefit our students.
It's also a great way to get involved and meet people. The Spring Auction is a tremendous fundraiser for OLMC School and an event that embraces school-wide participation.

The evening is sure to be full of donations, dining, fundraising, and fellowship! Let the fun begin!

If you have questions, please contact

Tammy (757-593-3621) or

Julie (757-876-7209).

Grant Writing Committee

We are looking for a few volunteers to join the

OLMC Grant Writing Committee.

Grants can be powerful instruments to enhance the assets of OLMC School programs. By creating new funding means for programs, grant committees deepen existing programs and add enriching activities to the curriculum.  The grant committee meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm.  Location TBD.  The committee is active and in need of volunteers to assist with grant research, being grant writers, committee and school liaisons (gather information needed from the school), and grant editors and follow-up helpers.  Please email if interested,  Kristen.glauner@theboshgroup.com.
