| | Have your children outgrown their uniforms? If so, please consider donating them to the Nurse's Office. The Clinic is in need of small sized uniforms, particularly pants. When little ones have accidents, land in mud, ect, there is very little available for them right now. Currently the smallest size available is an 8, and smaller uniforms would be greatly appreciated to help the students. God Bless you for your generosity!

From the Principal's Desk
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends of OLMC School,
As the schedule next week shows, we are gearing up for Catholic Schools Week at OLMC. You can be proud to be a Catholic school family! Statistics have long shown that Catholic schools do more with less. But you already know this, and that is why your children are here! We love having them at our school and love serving in this parish and Newport News community. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to do so.
Rumors of snow and flurries abound for the rest of this week. Cancellations or delays will be communicated via School Reach and email, as well as news stations. Please pray for good weather so that we will still be able to host the Italian Dinner and Talent Show scheduled for Friday evening.
With prayers for your families,
Sister Dominic

Catholic Schools Continue to Raise the Standards!
According to the Cato Institute in its February 2012 report on schools, "One of the first things you learn when you start to study the comparative performance of school systems is this: on average, Catholic schools are much more educationally effective and vastly more efficient than state-run schools." Academically Catholic schools outpace their counterparts in nearly all categories. For example: *Higher Test Scores: Catholic Schools score higher on standardized test scores. A report by the National Center for Education Statistics shows that in science alone, 8th graders in Catholic schools scored 11 points higher than their public school counterparts in 2011. Within the Richmond Diocese, our schools consistently rank in the top 10% on standardized test scores. *Higher SAT Scores: SAT scores published by the U.S. Department of Education show a steady decline in test scores over the last six years with mathematics scores falling by 6 points and writing falling by 8 points since 2006. By contrast, SAT scores for Catholic schools continue to grow with an average score of 1657 last year in the Richmond Diocese compared with the national average of 1477. *Higher Graduation Rates: Catholic Schools, including the Diocese of Richmond, maintain a 99% graduation rate. The U.S. average according to the National Center for Higher Education is 75.5%. *More Scholarships: In the Richmond Diocese alone, more than 50% of graduation seniors received scholarships in 2011-2012 totaling $24 million. *More Graduates Attend Four-Year Colleges: The percentage of seniors attending a four-year college is higher among Catholic school students (84.9%) compared to other religious schools (61.3%) and other private schools (57.2%). In the Diocese of Richmond, over 95% of our graduating seniors are attending four-year colleges.

A Dominic Duo
Coffee with Deacon Dominic & Sister Dominic

Friday, January 25th following School Mass, We would like to invite you to the first "Coffee with Sister" of the New Year!
Guest speaker, Deacon Dominic, who currently serves as deacon at St. Bede in Williamsburg, and who is a professor at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, will present on the Catechism of the Catholic Church currently celebrating its 20th Anniversary of Publication in this Year of Faith. Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, issued this Year of Faith last October for the renewal of the universal Catholic Church. In this holy Year, he invites all Catholics & Christians to encounter the Person of Jesus Christ more profoundly. To do this, we are encouraged to rediscover the joy of knowing Christ in the following ways:
1) Reading Scripture so as to know the Person of Christ and imitate His life. 2) Regular confession of our faith as given in the Nicene Creed. 3) Study of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, not as a reference book, but as a resource for deepening our Christ-centered spirituality. All are welcome to join us in the Commons Meeting Space following the 8:15 Friday morning Mass on January 25th. If there is interest, we will form a Catechism study group for the weeks ahead. We look forward to seeing you there!

We are looking forward to our February service project where we will be assisting PORT! The homeless are given a hot breakfast and dinner while they are at St. Michael Hall. During the day, they are on their own. Therefore, the Christian Service Club will be making bagged lunches for the homeless to take with them while they are out during the day.
We are doing a school-wide collection and are asking for donations of snacks and drinks that can go into their lunch bags. The club will be making about 100 bags!
Additionally, it was brought to our attention that the people supported by PORT are in great need of socks,
underwear, t-shirts, and long johns. Mostly men's items are needed, size large and up. There are also women in need and sizes medium and up are suggested. They are looking for clean and good condition white t-shirts. The trouble they are having with the weather being so wet is that the PORT guests are coming into the shelter with wet clothing and socks from being outside all day. The shelters don't have anything to give them that is clean and dry, so the homeless are remaining wet and cold through the night. If you are able to donate, please know that you will truly brighten the day of these people that truly need our help.
Suggested List of Donations:
-Bottled Water
-Juice Boxes
-Sodas
-Socks
-Underwear
-Long johns
-T-shirts
-Bagged snacks
-Bags of chips, Doritos, pretzels, ect.
-Crackers
-Any non-perishable item that would go into a lunch bag
-Monetary donations will also be accepted. Cash and checks should be labeled "PORT Project"
If you are able to donate anything, please send the items into school. Please send them to the attention of Mrs. Dugan, or you are welcome to label them and bring them into the Front Office.
