From the Principal's Desk
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends of OLMC School, Happy Epiphany! This most recent feast day has to be my favorite one on the Church calendar! This is the revelation of the Light that has come into the world, and which is for all people. How magnificent that these wise kings, using their learning - the science of the day - went in search of the kingly Child. Learning today is often turned in on itself and exalts the intellect rather than seeking the fulfillment of the intellect, Truth itself. The true wisdom of these wise men is not the level of intellectual prowess they achieved, which was significant in their day - they masterfully interpreted the meaning of the night sky with all its historical significance for the world. Their true wisdom lay in seeking the Truth, incarnate in a little Baby, who transcends all that is revealed in creation or in prophecy.
The sources for meditation in this scriptural story are rich and myriad: the star, the cold nights, the plodding camels, the journey, the identity of these men and their backgrounds and their purpose for setting out, their encounter with Herod contrasted with their encounter with Jesus - what rich sources for the imagination and prayerful meditation. These men had at their disposal the revelation of creation - the study of the night sky so familiar to those ancient cultures where light pollution never interfered with the diamond spotted heavens. By their formulas and hypotheses, based on years of experience and study, and in response to the longing that yet urged their hearts, they set out on a journey toward Judea. See what a gift this ability to reason, to use science and revelation of creation, is. When rightly used, it brings us nearer to God rather than separating us from Him. Science, opened to the transcendence of God and of the faith, unlocks the world for mankind.
In this story of the Epiphany, faith and reason are rightly ordered toward one another, enabling the wise men to encounter God. In this feast day, we see the blueprint for a true education, and one that we try to provide at OLMC School. Through the development of reason, science, and the mind (the wise men were the greatest scholars of their day), and openness to Him who transcends the world, our children are poised to encounter God, for their lives to be transformed by this encounter, and ready to bring His Light to a world beset by darkness. May we always encourage our children in this way!
With prayers for your families, Sister Dominic __________________________________________
CARPOOL: Tuesdays afternoon carpool was EXCELLENT! Thank you for NOT parking in the lot after 2:45 so that all cars can pull directly into the carpool lines. We finished carpool in under 9 minutes - it's very efficient. Thank you for following procedures. BINGO: There have been several weeks where the scheduled volunteers from the school were sparse, although the schedule is posted on the OLW weekly, emails are sent to individual homes, and the full schedule is posted online. As indicated in the letters of last spring and in the contract, missing a bingo night results in a fee which covers the charitable donation of the knights to OLMC School. Those who have not been signed in will receive an invoice/letter. As this year is a trial year, on the invoice there will also be an option for you to forego payment if you are able to work on a different night between now and the end of summer. REGISTRATION: We are now reregistering current families for the 2013-14 school year. Registration is $130. To encourage you to register before the open house, so that we can guarantee your seat prior to opening seats to new families, we are offering a $50 discount on registration so that it would cost $80 to register. This lasts only through Friday January 25th since the open house is at the end of the month. We are pleased to offer a few out of uniform opportunities to our students as follows: - The National Junior Honor Society has been sponsoring events to raise money for a school affected by Hurricane Sandy. They have raised just over $100 through the sale of Snowman Grams and are now offering an out of uniform opportunity (suggested $1.00 donation) for Thursday, January 10th. They deliberately chose an exam day to help the MS students relax toward the end of their exams.
- Catholic Schools Week is coming at the end of the month! As in the past, students who attend IN MASS DAY UNIFORM OLMC on Saturday evening or any Mass on Sunday the weekend of January 26-27 can receive an out of uniform pass in the commons area after Mass. Thank you for showing OLMC School pride by wearing the uniform and sharing with other parishioners how much you love the school. The pass can be used one day the following week at the student's discretion (not on a Mass day).

Recycle Your Greeting Cards for St. Jude's Ranch
As you start to clean up from the holidays, please don't throw away your used greeting cards! Fourth Grader and Junior Girl Scout, Paige Sondgeroth, is collecting used greeting cards to send to St. Jude's Ranch, an organization that helps abused, abandoned and neglected children. As part of her Junior Journey award, Paige is organizing this community service project to benefit St. Jude's Ranch Recycled Card Program. Volunteers and children at St. Jude's Ranch take the used greeting cards, remove the pretty front of the card and attach it to a new back. They sell the new cards, birthday cards, thank you cards, ect. Please be sure to send the entire card, not just the front. Not only will you be recycling, but also benefiting children whose parents can't take care of them. Please send in your used cards to the attention of Paige Sondgeroth in 4B.

Catholic School's Week January 27th-February 2nd
Explanation of the Theme
Our Lady of Mount Carmel School will celebrate Catholic Schools Week at the end of this month. This year's National celebration will affirm the theme "Catholic Schools Raise the Standards." The premise supports the recent launch of the national standards and benchmarks for effective Catholic schools, while ensuring high academic standards and promoting Catholic identity. This year's theme celebrates the constant attention Catholic educators pay to increasing the learning and growth in faith of all students. The logo represents a progressive growth in achievements and ultimately culminates with a cross, signifying the incredible faith which is the basis of Catholic education.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel School is looking forward to this lively week long celebration! Our test scores well above the national average, distinct honor of the National Blue Ribbon, outstanding professional educators, and most recent award for the Best Private School in Hampton Roads are all reasons to celebrate how OLMC is working to "raise the standards". Parents, Parishioners, Alumni and Friends of OLMC are invited to join us for Catholic School's Week. Details outlining the week long celebration will follow in a future OLW.
