From the Principal's Desk

Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends of OLMC,

As we pass through these final weeks of November, we encounter liturgies rich with revelation for our lives.  Passing quickly over Thursday, November 22nd which doubles as Thanksgiving Day - an important heritage in the United States - AND the feast of Saint Cecilia, patroness of our Dominican Sisters, we come to Sunday, November 25th, the final Sunday in Ordinary Time which is the feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King.  This is a great solemnity in the Church, and one which teaches us that Jesus Christ, Son of God, who was victorious over sin and death, who now reigns at the right hand of the Father WILL COME AGAIN.  This truth, when fully grasped, evokes one of two polar reactions: either terror or joyful anticipation.  The feast was instituted within the past century to remind us who we are and where we are going.  We are subjects of, and citizens under, the King of Heaven and Earth; and Christians are, by nature, pilgrims on their way to their Homeland.  The purpose of the feast day is to correct substantial errors and beliefs about the destiny of the human person.  The popular philosophy that was sown during the 18th century Age of Enlightenment, and came to fruition within the culture in the 20th century, was the gospel of secularization.  This "gospel" proclaims that the human person can look only to this world for the meaning of his life and for his destiny.  While the secularist movement is shrouded with many human accomplishments, particularly in the area of scientific and medical advancement, these good advances cover a profound error about the destiny of the human person.  The feast of Jesus Christ the King calls us to our true destiny, one that is fixed in eternity and not in time.  It is a feast that demands our religious liberty - we are beings with a supernatural destiny and must be free to live according to the path which takes us to our destiny, both in the faith we profess as well as in the way we live our public and private lives.  As we enter into this long weekend, let us recall the blessings God has so generously showered on us, on our families and community, and particularly on our country.  May our gratitude merit a continual protection of these gifts and may the feast of Christ the King deepen in us our unfailing allegiance to Him, whose Kingship was firmly established upon the throne of the cross.

On behalf of the faculty and staff at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, I wish you a very blessed Thanksgiving holiday.

With prayers for your families,

Sister Dominic

Spanish Classes Use Technology to Communicate
Across the Globe

The ability to use technology and its resources to ask questions, to consider answers and to develop responses is key to succeeding both at school and in the world. The technology in the Spanish classroom has enabled me to provide a rich and a truly unique learning experience for my students. This is made possible through the use of technologies such as the IPAD, ITV, smart phones, and many different programs like Facetime and Skype. These technologies help our student open their eyes to the world and communicate beyond the classroom walls. Thanks to the Facetime app, my seventh grade students were given an opportunity ask questions and to chat with my brother in Spain. This experience is something they will not forget. I saw the excitement and enthusiasm in their eyes and increased willingness to learn on their faces after introducing these experiences through technology. I want my classroom to be without boundaries, to be a journey for each of my students, to give them an opportunity to explore and experience the many different cultures of the world, and to have an opportunity to enrich their lives and who they will become as adults. I will continue to use technology in my classroom to ensure that my students will have the best opportunity to learn about the Spanish language and the cultures throughout the world.

Anti-Bullying Efforts

OLMC is taking a proactive stand against bullying. We have a committee of dedicated teachers working on this problem which is prevalent in so many schools today. Just a few weeks ago, we had Jon Sargent present a program to our Middle School students regarding cyber safety.
After the holidays we will be having the NNPD
come in and speak with our students
about internet safety and bullying.

We can't do this alone. Parents, we need your help. "You can do this by creating a culture of accountability at home. This means that you hold our child accountable for: how he talks to you, how he talks to his siblings, how he treats family members. When he's bullying his siblings, don't get sucked into his excuses; just because he had a bad day at school does not give him the right to mistreat anyone in your family. Your child needs to learn how to solve social problems and deal with their emotions without acting out behaviorally. Your child needs to learn this from you." Information from www.stopbullying.gov

At OLMC, we are working on accountability as well. When we hear from students who have seen bullying happen or when we hear from a parent,  we take it seriously and look into the problem immediately. If you or your student knows of a situation that needs attention,
please contact our school Counselor,
Mrs. Baily at 757-596-2754, ext 223.
