From the Principal's Desk

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends of OLMC School,

As we are less than two weeks away from a Presidential election of extraordinary importance, I am including in this brief letter some links to websites which are linked to information from official Catholic sites including the Virginia Catholic Conference and the site for the USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops).   We have all been bombarded with the campaigning this year, even those of us in the convent who never turn on the television!  The campaign is in the height of intensity, and there is a great deal at stake, even for a little Catholic school in Newport News.

Perhaps we would do well to pull away from the media with its political mud-slinging for the next week or so and find an hour or two to retreat into some quiet, and look at factual information, rather than listening to slogans intended to slant our perception in a particular way.  (These campaigns in particular, and the saturated marketing environment in general, remind me of one wise professor of mine who insisted that the mark of an educated mind is that it is not swayed by propaganda but can think clearly and truly).  I invite you to bring this decision to prayer as well.  God is immensely interested in our lives, even in how we vote.  I encourage you to pray about the election and to study factual information, with a heart open to the law and love of God.

Below are links with simple, summative articles which may help focus attention with regard to the upcoming elections.

The out of uniform opportunity for Thursday, October 25th is for children whose parents completed the online survey which closed last Friday.  Each classroom has a list of children who are able to participate in this out of uniform.

The next out of uniform date is for the "A" classes who won the box top competition.  This out of uniform day is scheduled for next Tuesday, October 30th.

Our first open forum for the year is to be held Thursday evening (October 25th) in the library in the middle school building.  The session begins at 6:30 and lasts until 7:00.  This is an opportunity for you to bring questions and comments to the School Board.

With prayers for your families,
Sister Dominic

Anti-Bullying Awareness

OLMC is dedicated to increasing bully awareness. Our proactive approach works to prevent, resolve and eliminate bullying in our school. We are working to raise awareness and promote prevention in our school. On October 24th at 1:30pm, the Middle School Students will be treated to a presentation about cyber bullying and Internet safety.

Cyber bullying is one of the fastest growing problems among young Internet users today. Additionally, cyber safety is extremely important and is an area of concern as the Internet has opened up a world of information for anyone with a computer and a connection. We are excited about the opportunity to continue to educate our students, and encourage parents of all grade levels to attend our cyber presentation.

The Living Rosary

Parents, Parishioners, and Friends of OLMC,
please join us for

The Living Rosary

Thursday, October 25th at 2pm
in the school gym

October is celebrated in the Church as the Month of the Rosary and it is an opportunity to teach and re-teach the mysteries of the rosary, which help us to meditate on and imitate the life of Jesus Christ.  Please join us for The Living Rosary as the school community gathers in the afternoon and prays the rosary together.  Students from each classroom will lead one of the prayers.  They will sit in the shape of a rosary and light a candle which represents a bead of the rosary. The rest of the class and many parents, sit throughout the gym and join in prayer. We welcome you!

Pet Drive Success!

Faith, academics and service are among the top three characteristics of OLMC students. With a strong Catholic identity and superior academics OLMC students stand out in the community. Recognizing that service is an immense part of the total education of a child, our students participated in a school-wide service project led by OLMC's Christian Service Club. The students worked together to serve the local community and the Lord by collecting donations for the Peninsula Pet Pantry. This project was in collaboration with the church's outreach program, and students were eager and enthusiastic about serving needy pet owners in the community. Thanks to the students of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School many local pet owners received aid and the help they needed to feed their pets this winter.

The Christian Service Club would like to thank all of those that donated and supported the pet drive for the Peninsula Pet Pantry. The Pantry was overjoyed with OLMC's generosity and sincerely want to thank everyone for their contributions.
