From the Principal's Desk

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends of OLMC School,

Thank you to so many who have completed the parent satisfaction survey for the OLMC Strategic Plan. The survey closes at midnight this Friday. If you complete the survey at home, please print the final page of the survey and write your child(rens)'s name(s) on it, and send it to the front office to receive an out of uniform opportunity for them. The survey is administered for the sake of the Strategic Plan and is analyzed and presented to the school by a third party market researcher. This is an integral part of the Strategic Plan and I am grateful for your participation. The link to the survey is:

OLMC Strategic Plan Survey

A second survey will be coming to your homes in paper format, which is being administered in all 24 Catholic Schools by the Office of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Richmond. Unfortunately, the local school and the diocese were not able to merge questions onto one survey. The diocesan survey is widely standardized and serves a more global purpose, rather than one specific to our school, nor were we able to select the timing for their survey. I hope you will consider completing this survey for the Diocese and returning it to the school as early as is convenient for you. They will be bundled and forwarded to the Diocese. A letter from the Diocese accompanies the survey and will provide more information.

Congratulations to Deacon Anton Siochi, who was ordained to the diaconate by Bishop Francis DiLorenzo last Saturday at the Cathedral. In his homily, the Bishop exhorted these 19 new permanent deacons (and 19 more to be ordained on November 3rd) to be active in their parishes, with particular emphasis on their contribution to education. We are proud to have Deacon Anton already serving on our school board and we join in prayers of thanksgiving for this blessing to our parish and school.

I know many of you are looking for ways to enter into the Year of Faith in concrete ways both for yourselves and for your families. I encourage you to attend the lecture series offered at the parish throughout the year. Father John David will be speaking on the historical background of the Second Vatican Council on most Thursdays in November. Check the bulletin or church website for details. The Vatican has offered generous plenary indulgences for the Year of Faith, including attendance at such lectures, and which details can be found on this Vatican link.

Year of Faith

In union with the intentions of Pope Benedict XVI and his expressed wishes that the faithful use this Year to study and pray through the Catechism of the Catholic Church, I would like to invite all who are interested to a book study on this phenomenal gift of the Church, the Catechism. Look in a future OLW for an announcement for an opening meeting. You can attend the first meeting to see if you are interested in participating in a deeper study of the Catechism.

Let us pray for one another and for our parish and school, that we will be open to the grace of deeper conversion to live our faith authentically both in our private and public lives.

With prayers for your families,

Sister Dominic

Strategic Plan Parent Survey

Our Lady of Mount Carmel School is in the process of conducting a Strategic Plan.  As parents of the students at our school, we want you to realize that you have a direct impact on the direction of the school. Your feedback is essential and will drive a large part of the committee work for the Strategic Plan. The parent survey is now open and we are asking for your participation. Surveys are absolutely vital and an essential part of this process, and your candid feedback is truly necessary.

The survey is now open and will close at midnight on October 19th. Please take 15 minutes to provide thoughtful answers to the prompts. The results of the survey are anonymous and will be reviewed and analyzed by a third party.  As in the past, the completion of this survey will earn an out of uniform pass for your child(ren). Please print the final page of the survey, put your children's names on it and send it into the front office. God bless you and all that you do to foster the mission of our school, and thank you for helping to determine the course of the future of OLMC!

November 6th
Bring a Friend to School Day!

Newport News public schools will be closed on November 6, 2012 for the presidential elections. OLMC will be open that day and we would love to share our school with friends and neighbors!

On November 6th, we invite all students to bring a friend to school! If you know someone who would like to attend OLMC for a day, please extend the invitation to come see our school.

The Bring a Friend to School program follows the same procedures as a shadow day, and reservations are required. Please contact the school Front Office at 757-596-2754 to sign up!

Anti-Bullying Awareness

OLMC is dedicated to increasing bully awareness. Our proactive approach works to prevent, resolve and eliminate bullying in our school. We are working to raise awareness and promote prevention in our school. On October 24th at 1:30pm, the Middle School Students will be treated to a presentation about cyber bullying and Internet safety.

Cyber bullying is one of the fastest growing problems among young Internet users today. Additionally, cyber safety is extremely important and is an area of concern as the Internet has opened up a world of information for anyone with a computer and a connection. We are excited about the opportunity to continue to educate our students, and encourage parents of all grade levels to attend our cyber presentation.

SACS Meeting
Standard One

Our Lady of Mount Carmel School is fully accredited, and is renowned as a dually accredited school. OLMC was awarded and maintains accreditations by both the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Southern Associaion of Independent Schools (SAIS).  Every five years, every aspect of our school, from curriculum and instruction to facilities and administration are analyzed and assessed by the School Improvement Team to ensure our school fulfilles best practices for continuous school improvement.  OLMC School is currently undergoing its five year self-study for SACS re-accreditation.  Recognized by the United States Department of Education, SACS is a prestigious regional accreditation organization responsible for accrediting schools and colleges in all of the southern states. Their third-party approval ensures that schools are systemically prepared to sustain a model of best practices in quality education.  They will award accreditation to schools that that meet their superior criteria and uphold quality standards.

During after school SACS meetings, the faculty and staff of OLMC gather to discuss ideas and principles related to the standards for quality schools, as they relate to the criteria required by SACS. There are five comprehensive standards with which we must comply. Recently, the committee for standard one gave a presentation about the purpose and direction of the school. Standard one reads, "the school maintains and communicates a purpose and direction that commit to high expectations for learning as well as shared values and beliefs about teaching and learning." Review processes, school communication plans, the educational culture and programs, and improvement processes were among the strongest pieces of evidence gathered. The Standard One Committee has done an outstanding job of recognizing our greatest efforts and identifying goals toward improving the fulfillment of our direction and purpose. In the coming weeks, the faculty and staff will be working to address the remaining standards for excellence.

School-Wide
Pet Pantry Project

Our Lady of Mount Carmel School is conducting a pet pantry collection led by the Christian Service Club. OLMC students, along with their families, are encouraged to help the Peninsula Pet Pantry. This pet pantry was created to help pet owners facing economic hardships feed their pets and care for them. When times get tough financially, many pet owners are forced to abandon their pets because they can not provide adequate care for them.  For many of these people, their pets are a source of comfort and companionship.

In union with the parish outreach program, OLMC School is currently collecting donations of pet food, cat litter, and pet treats. Change, monetary donations, and pet food store gift cards are also greatly appreciated. If you are able to give to this great cause, please send your donations to school with your student(s) or bring them by the Front Office. The collection will end on October 19th. God bless you for your generosity.

Nominations End this Saturday!
