B&P Students hold a week long celebration to honor Fr. Bill Atkinson
To celebrate what would have been Fr. Atkinson's 70th birthday, many members of the Bonner & Prendie community contributed to a week long celebration of his life, through the hard work of teachers Grace Kane and Sr. Ann Brigid IHM.

A weeklong series of prayers and stories were shared over the loudspeaker by a variety of staff who knew Fr Bill personally.  To culminate, on Friday, theology classes came to the Father Bill Atkinson Center for cake and a presentation from Sister Ann Brigid.

Philly.com also published a beautiful article on the life of Fr. Atkinson that can be found here:

_______________________________________

Happy New Year! It is my hope that you had a blessed Christmas and a healthy start to 2016. We have certainly had a great first few weeks here at your alma mater, with many noteworthy projects and initiatives that you will read about in this newsletter. Even more, many of these "acts" continue to support the Holy Father's call to support the "Year of Mercy"- an initiative announced by Pope Francis that I had written about in an earlier newsletter. Capitalizing on the call to participate in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, our community has been intentional in leading and participating in acts of service throughout the month of January.

On Friday, January 15, our Bonner & Prendie community participated in a very moving ceremony before the boys basketball game. Area veteran associations and MBAP alumni who have served our country participated in a service dedicating an empty chair in honor of POWs and MIAs. It was a packed house in the Frederico '70 Gymnasium and was a great way to honor our servicemen and servicewomen. In addition, it gave the opportunity for our current students to see how important it is to recognize the efforts of those who served. Oh by the way, we beat O'Hara too!

Then on Saturday, January 16, we had over 200 students participate in our Second Annual mini-Thon (which is an off shoot of Penn State's philanthropic tradition of Thon). Our students danced the night away and participated in a variety of activities for over seven hours. In return, they raised over $18,000 to go toward research for pediatric cancer - almost doubling their total from last year!

Through our CSC, our students are currently participating in the Souper Bowl of Caring, which is an effort to seek donations of canned soup which will ultimately be donated to those in need. Of course there is a competitive piece to this, as we are competing against Cardinal O'Hara to see who can collect the most cans of soup. I will be sure to keep you updated.

Finally, I close with one more story about service that I am certain many of you can relate too. As you all know, I am very new to the Bonner & Prendie community and continue to be amazed by the dedication and efforts put forth by those who have walked the halls of all our buildings, both past and present. Most recently, our community has been getting a lot of attention centered on Father Bill Atkinson, O.S.A., an alum, Augustinian, and former teacher at the school. Father Bill has recently been approved by Rome to be considered for sainthood. This month, we celebrated Father Bill's 70th birthday with a week long series of activities. Each day a story was shared about Father Bill over the loudspeaker during our 7th period prayer. The week culminated with a birthday celebration in the Father Atkinson Center with a piece of cake for each student and a short presentation about Father Bill's life and legacy at the school.

I learned so much about Father Bill that week and was in awe as to how much he had dedicated his life to serving the students and the school. As you may or may not know, Father Bill was a quadriplegic confined to a wheel chair, yet he lived out his life teaching and inspiring students, attending sporting events, and serving as an ambassador to our community. As we shared what we were doing for Father Bill's birthday on social media, it was evident that he had such an impact on so many.  Alumni and others posted personal stories about Father Bill and the impact that he had on their own lives. I hope you have an opportunity to read up on the stories and continue to follow his sainthood process.

Thank you again for all your continued support and may God bless you!

Sincerely,

John Cooke

Preceding the Boys Basketball game earlier in the month, a ceremony was held to unveiling a "POW/MIA Chair of Honor". This Chair is set to serves as a reminder for all  the sacrifices made for our country by missing American service members who have long been forgotten by all but their immediate family and friends.
