Information to Improve YOUR Golf Game (DECEMBER 2015)

My 2016 Golf Wish For You!!

My wish for you is that your Golf in 2016 is The Best Ever - and that what you read in this newsletter can help you achieve that goal.  If there is a topic related to golf improvement that you would like to see discussed here let me know.  2015 was, as I mention below, a terrific year for information that can help golfers improve their skills and play their best.

You will hear a lot more about the book "Lowest Score Wins" early next year.  But in the meantime......here is a neat little drill you can do to practice your short game technique for shots in the 20 yard range.  Can YOU do 4 balls?...

This is one you probably do NOT want to practice - but it is pretty funny...

The State of Modern Clubhead Design

Last month I mentioned that Tom Wishon from Tom Wishon Golf
presented the Keynote address at the 10th AGCP Clubfitting Roundtable in November.  He published two videos in August related to Driver and Iron clubhead design.  These videos cover a number of the main points he discussed at the Roundtable, and I think are worth watching.  Particularly since right now many of the big golf club companies are promoting their latest "More Distance" "Better Technology" new clubheads.

I will provide the links to these videos below.  But here are some of the important points in them that I hope you will consider if you are looking to purchase new golf clubs anytime in the future....
  • From the standpoint of golf club head performance, there are limits to what is possible.  The USGA has set limits on the maximum spring face potential of a clubhead (driver or iron) - COR max of 0.830.  The USGA has also set a maximum driver head size of 460 cc (with a 10 cc allowance), and a maximum clubhead MOI of 5,900 g-cm^2.
  • You can be assured that all of the new high-performance driver and iron heads are at at the max COR limit.  But they are not above this limit.
  • An interesting point that Tom makes relates to driver heads that have moveable weights in them.  He notes that, for the amount of weight movement possible, the most the center of gravity of a driver head can move is about 3/16th of an inch.  As a result - unless you are a great ball striker who consistently hits the center of the clubface - moveable weight technology will have little if any influence on how a new driver will perform for you.
  • If you are, though, looking for more distance in your irons, you should definitely consider a high-COR iron head design (if you are not playing one already).  But be careful - make sure that more distance is not just a result of juiced-up iron head lofts.
  • Tom's bottom line is that we are at the limit of new golf clubhead technology.  And in fact that there is too much emphasis placed on clubheads.  Great club performance for a golfer is a result of a golf club that is the best overall fit for that golfer.

All that said - enjoy these videos!

The BEST of 2015!

I believe that 2015 has been a great year for information that can help golfers improve their games and play their best golf.  So, in the holiday spirit, here are MY votes for the best new sources of Golf Improvement Information in 2015!
  • "The Practice Manual" by Adam Young.  In my opinion this is the most important golf improvement book of the year, and maybe in many years. He also posts once or twice a week from his web site Adam Young Golf, and every post is a gem of information to help you improve your practice and play better.
  • "Your Short Game Solution" by James Sieckmann.  This book is I think the total package on improving all parts of your short game.  He not only discusses technique, but also how to practice to implement the technique he teaches.  The best short game improvement book I have ever read, and his approach works for me!
  • "Make More Putts" by Juan Gutierrez.  Written by the 2011 World Golf Hall of Fame Putting Champion.  This book combines the best process I have ever seen for evaluating all phases of your putting, with 150 different and interesting drills you can choose from to improve your putting results.  An excellent book for someone who will dedicate himself to become a great putter.
  • "10-Minute Toughness" by Jason Selk.  My friend Noa Kageyama, who writes the weekly Bulletproof Musician blog, told me about this book.  If we want to practice to improve, we should also practice our mental approach to golf.  This book outlines a terrific process you can use to practice and improve your mental game.  Jason is the Director of Sports Psychology for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team.

  • "8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back," by Esther Gokhale.  Come on Tony, how does this fit?  Well, if you ever have had back pain issues that have affected your golf, you will know how it fits.  Her approach works and can not only help you reduce back pain, but help you get in a more athletic posture on your golf shots.

And now for a couple of Bonus Items for the BEST of 2015...

  • The Mindside Podcast, by Dr. Bhrett McCabe.  Dr. McCabe is an expert in performance and sports psychology.  He does weekly podcasts on topics of interest to coaches, players, and parents.  It is the ONE podcast that I absolutely have to listen to each week!
  • The Bulletproof Musician blog posts, by Dr. Noa Kageyama.  Noa also is trained in Sports Psychology, and his writing is often focused toward helping musicians improve their performance.  But almost every one of his weekly blog posts includes information that can help golfers improve their practice and performance.

  • David Orr Flatstick Academy.  This is a subscription web site where David posts at least one and often two articles or videos a week.  For $10 a month you get to learn from one of the best putting instructors in the world.  I learn something every week that I can use to help golfers improve their putting.
So there is MY list of the best for 2015 - what a great year!
