Information to Improve YOUR Golf Game (September 2015)

Some USGA Goodies!!

The USGA has been busy creating some useful and fun information for golfers.  Here are a few of the things that I found that you might be interested in....

  • If you have a smart phone, you can now download a USGA Rules of Golf app.  This app includes a quick guide and all of the golf rules you would find in an actual USGA rule book.
  • Not only that, but there is now a series of 12 videos on the USGA web site describing some of the most common rules encountered when you play golf.  USGA Rules Videos
  • What Would You Shoot?  Finally, if you have a USGA handicap index you can determine what score you most likely would shoot on some of the courses where USGA events were played this year.  88 for me at Chambers Bay?

Posture Revisited.  In my last newsletter, I mentioned that I had just started on an effort to improve my posture.  Well, I found an excellent book by Esther Gokhale - "8 Steps To A Pain-Free Back."  I have made huge improvements in my posture as a result of applying the techniques in this book.  Here is the link if you are interested in looking at it...

AND - Esther agreed to do a Podcast Interview with me, this was published on Monday September 14.  If you are interested in listening to it, here is the link...

The TrackMan Video Goldmine!

About a month ago, I found a link to a wonderful set of videos created by the TrackMan launch monitor folks.  For a golfer looking for information on how to improve his game through the technology of launch monitors, this video collection is simply a gold mine.  Here is the overall link to these videos...

     TrackMan Golf Video Archives

There are plenty of links to explore and learn from, but I will highlight three of these below...

Ball Data and Club Data Links.  These two links contain descriptions of many of the most important things that Launch Monitors measure - like Club Path, Face Angle, Spin Loft, and more.  There are also descriptions of things like Gear Effect and the Ball Flight Laws.  Really good basic information.

TrackMan FundamentalsThis section covers 10 areas related to what TrackMan (and other launch monitors like Flightscope) can measure that are important to understanding golf ball flight.

One of these ten videos I thought was worth highlighting.  It was the video Straight Shot (Fundamental 9).  The video records Jason Duffner hitting a straight shot with his driver in 3 different ways.  I never thought of this possibility before - thank you Driver Gear Effect!

Performance of Average Male Amateur GolferThere is a wealth of valuable learning information in this video.  Three main things stand out....
  • Many golfers give up as a much as 30 yards off the tee due to incorrect technique and poor equipment;
  • That driving distance loss can have a major influence on how close they can hit their approach shots to the green; and
  • The average golfer hits way more shots short of the target than past it.  Adding more club for your shots can be an easy way to lower scores!

Thanks for these videos TrackMan - keep it up!!

Thoughts On Choosing YOUR Golf Ball

If you Google "Choosing Your Golf Ball" you will find a lot of articles with different thoughts on making this choice.  Recently I found three articles that I think are worth reading, all with just a little different take on this question...

   How To Find The Right Golf Ball

   Premium Wedge Game - Budget Golf Balls?

   Women's Golf Balls - Choosing The Right Ones For You

If you want to make an informed choice on the best golf ball to optimize your scoring, here are my overall thoughts on how to make the right (Wright?) decision for you.  My comments below are primarily for golfers with handicaps greater than about 10:
  • Compared to just a few years ago, I believe there now are not many "rock" golf balls out there for golfers - really hard golf balls, those that are designed just for driving distance improvement and that have poor wedge spin;
  • If you, however, find a golf ball that can produce 10 or more yards driving distance for you I strongly suggest you use that one - even if it may not create great spin with your wedge shots.  Shorter second shots really do matter;
  • If you cannot find a golf ball that can improve your driving distance, make your golf ball decision based on best feel and best shot spin around the greens.
The New Mizuno Irons Are Here!

Two weeks ago I received the yearly update to my Mizuno fitting cart.  Here are the most important improvements (to this already great iron fitting system!) that are now available:
  • Updates to the very popular JPX EZ irons, and
  • Additions of two new light-weight steel fitting shafts - the KBS Tour 90 shaft and the True Temper XP 95 shaft.

Contact me if you want to schedule some time to see and hit these new Mizuno clubs.

Happy cooler September golfing weather!
