Information to Improve YOUR Golf Game (August 2015)

Mission Possible - Improving My Posture!

For the past few months, I have been working to recover from some middle-left back pain that has kept me from playing golf and playing at my best.  Much of the pain is now gone, as a result of physical therapy.

BUT - I now realize that my overall poor posture will, if not improved, keep me from being pain free in the future. So I am on a Personal Mission to learn how to radically improve my posture.  I have some book and DVD resources that I am using and they are promising.  More on that next month I hope!

In the meantime, I would love to get feedback from some of you about things you have done to improve your personal posture.  Email me at tony@gameimprovementgolf.com if you have good information that I can share in this newsletter.  Hard to play great golf when you are hurting!

I found this very interesting blog post recently on the Bullet Proof Musican web site - about improving the odds of achieving your goals:

My brother and I played the Oak Ridge Country Club Member Guest tournament recently.  During one of the rounds, one of our opponents talked about how it can be possible to drink TOO much water during a hot day (it happened to him once he wound up in a hospital!) - I had never heard of this, and so here is some info.

Below I will connect you to one of the best articles that Tom Wishon (from Tom Wishon Golf Technology) has ever written related to custom club fitting.  This particular article is on Golf Club Swingweighting and what you need to know about it for your golf clubs.

The most important thing he says, in my opinion, in this article is this...

"Once you find the best swing weight for your golf club(s),
that swing weight is of little importance
when you purchase new golf clubs."

Just because you have played with a set of irons that you loved that had a swingweight of D1, this does NOT mean that if you are fit for a new set of irons they need to also have a D1 swingweight.  It is the overall weight feel of the club that is most important - and a new set with a D1 swingweight can feel and perform radically different than your present set of clubs.

So thanks again Tom! - and I hope you enjoy reading this link...

I hope you will enjoy some additional interesting links to golf improvement information below!

Yes, Bubba Is Just Different!
Bob Williams, The Pasadena Clubfitter, sent this link to me and other AGCP friends this month.  Take a look at how Bubba sets up his clubs - both how much tape he has put under his grips, and how open he sets of the face angles of his irons.  I have never heard of anyone setting up their irons so the faces would sit 10 degrees open at address!

How The Wind Affects Your Golf Ball
Here is an interesting little article that was published in GolfWRX.  Please for sure watch the short video on how wind affects spin and how to account for that when you pick your clubs for shots...

Andrew Rice - Do Draws Go Further Than Fades?
I know that personally I hit my drives more solidly when I hit a draw rather than a fade.  Here is a neat article done by Andrew Rice on his tests and evaluation on why he believes drives hit with a draw go farther than fades...

5 Questions To Ask Yourself...
Last month I reviewed Adam Young's book "The Practice Manual."  One of the things he highly recommends in that book is that you keep a small notebook so that you can write down notes about how you practiced and what you learn during practice.  Well, the article below is about using a notebook to help you improve your game by writing the answers to "5 Little Questions" after you complete a round...

What An Accomplishment!!

A few months ago a new friend, Dennis Corley, came to me to fit him into the correct shafts for a set of Bridgestone irons he liked to play.  So we went through a full fitting process and found the right length, MOI club weighting, and shaft weight for him - Aerotech i95 S flex taper tip shafts were the best performers.

Dennis had been attempting to pass the PGA Playing Ability Test.  I just received this note from him about his success!

Tony - I thought I would let you know that I recently passed the PGA Playing Abilities Test, a 36-hole, single day test requiring the player to shoot within a certain score to pass.  It is a tough test on all fronts: skill, physical stamina, and mentally.

This was try #4 for me.  I previously missed it by 1-3 strokes each time.  Well, the challenge being significantly "mental", I can say that this was the first attempt I made using my newly "MOI-matched" irons that you customized for me.

My distance control was great all day and I hit it to 3 feet for birdie on my 36th hole to pass the test by 4 strokes!  Dennis

Congratulations Dennis - what a great accomplishment!
