Information to Improve YOUR Golf Game (May 2015)

So - Which State Has The Best Golfers?

I bet those of you from states other than Tennessee may not believe these statistics.  But....I recently found an article that compiles some handicap and scoring statistics from different states in the U.S. - and Tennessee golfer stack up pretty well in this!  Here is the link...

From time to time you can now see what are called "Pro Tracer" summaries of shots hit on different PGA Tour event holes.  Here is one from the recent Tour Championship - for shots hit on Friday at #17 at TPC Sawgrass.  Pretty cool stuff!

Just as neat is this sequence of shots on Friday at #17 by Will McKenzie - an amazing short game recovery!

A local golfing friend of mine, Doug Goeringer, has written two interesting golf iPhone apps.  The first of these - OptimusDrive - can be used to help golfers understand conditions (ball speed, launch, etc.) to optimize their driver carry and total distance.  The second - OptimusPutt - can be used by golfers to collect their putting data for a round and compare their "Strokes Gained" putting results to PGA Tour averages.  Both are pretty neat! - here are links to descriptions of them...

AimPoint Express Revisited!

AimPoint Express has been a topic in this newsletter a number of times in the past.  I come back to it again because reading greens is so important - if you want to truly become a great putter.  The process works, it is simple to learn, and many of the best players in the world are using it.

Recently I found what I believe is the best video I have seen so far that describes the history of AimPoint and AimPoint Express, and how it is applied to accurate green reading...

     AimPoint Express Explained

The best way to learn AimPoint Express is from a Certified Instructor.  However, there is now a DVD that you can purchase to help you learn some of the basics of AimPoint Express - here is the link....

Like I said - it works!!

What IS Your Swing Speed?

In the most recent Golf Improvement Podcast my friend Mike McFadden (PGA Teaching Pro from Germany) talked about some of the things golfers can do to Swing Faster and get more Distance on their drives.  Perhaps you are interested in increasing your driver swing speed (swinging in balance, of course!).  One way to know if you are achieving this goal is to measure your swing speed.

You can certainly have your swing speed measured on a launch monitor, but there are other devices available you can use to measure your swing speed - with your driver and all of the clubs in your bag if you wish.  Below are some links to a number of different options that are available  - and there are certainly more than I have noted here...
  • Swing Speed Radar  This device has been around for a number of years, it works (I have one), and is pretty inexpensive.  No frills - measures your clubhead swing speed.
  • Zepp  This one is interesting.  There is a small device that you attach to your golf glove, and data is collected and displayed on your iPhone.  It measures swing speed, tempo, and some elements of your golf swing.
  • dd
  • Swing Caddie  This is advertised as a portable launch monitor, and give you data for swing and ball speed, smash factor, and shot carry distance.  It also has a mode so you can enter a "target" distance and compare your shot distance to the target distance.
  • SkyPro  This device is part of a family of devices from SkyCaddie.  It attaches to your golf shaft, and tracks your golf club during your swing and feeds data to your iPhone.  There are a number of other devices like this that are available, and all if them can be used to measure your swing speed.
  • Game Golf  This device was the rage of the 2015 PGA Equipment Show.  There is a small "tag" that you put on the end of each of your golf clubs, and you are able to collect data from all of your golf shots during a round of golf and analyze it.

One thing to note is that perfect accuracy in measuring your swing speed - if you are looking to increase it - is not important.  What you need is to be able to find out IF you have increased your swing speed, and by how much.  So Swing Faster!

"Make More Putts" Almost Here!

Last month I let you know about a great new putting improvement book - "Make More Putts!" - by Juan Gutierrez. It will be available on Amazon.com by the end of May, and I will send out a special notice to newsletter subscribers when this happens.  Until then, look below at the book cover!

---------------

My monthly "Shoot Lower Scores!" sessions continue - on Saturday May 23, 9 am to 3 pm - at the Centennial Golf Academy.  This month - "Your Golf Specs Matter!"  I am doing 20-minute sessions with golfers where I will measure some of the most important specifications of their clubs, and then let them know if their clubs are holding them back from playing their best golf.  If you want to set up an appointment, email me at tony@gameimprovementgolf.com
