Information to Improve YOUR Golf Game (January 2015)

Train Ugly!

A few weeks ago I discovered another new web site dedicated to helping anyone who wants to learn better practice techniques to improve skills - for golf and other sports.

The site is Train Ugly - and Trevor Regan is the brains behind this site. Here is the link to Train Ugly:

I particularly hope you have time to read some of Trevor's "V-Essays." They provide some great information related to modern knowledge about effective practice techniques to develop skills.

Here is a link to an interesting article written by a personal trainer who was on tour with a PGA Tour pro in 2014.  Some good insights about fitness, nutrition, and golf shot selection:

Lightweight Shafts = More Club Speed?
(Surprise, Surprise!)

One might think that it would be a "no brainer" that golfers swinging lighter golf shafts would create more clubhead speeds.  Well, recently a custom club fitter from South Carolina - Chris Wycoff - published some results in GolfWRX that suggest that this is not necessarily true.

The link to Chris's GolfWRX article is provided below:

  Chris Wycoff - Do Lighter Shafts Create More Clubhead Speed?

Chris did tests for golfers with high and low clubhead speeds, and high and low handicaps - for categories.  He used stiff shafts and shaft weights varying between 40 and 70 grams - a pretty wide shaft weight variation.

The results show that shaft weight - for these tests - had very little influence on clubhead speed.  Actually in some cases clubhead speed increased when heavier shafts were used.  And there were also some cases where total distance increased when heavier shafts were used.

What caused these results?  My take on this is that it shows that golfers are individuals, and different golfers react differently to different shaft weights.  Clearly there is no one-to-one relationship between clubhead speed and shaft weight.  As Chris says in his article - " ... be very careful when selecting a lightweight shaft for your driver."  Or perhaps stated another way - Test Test Test!

How Does YOUR Golf Game Measure Up?

A few months ago MyGolfSpy published an interesting study of the golf results for 15,000 golfers.  It was a study of Overall Golfing Performance By Handicap.  Here is the link to the results:

     MyGolfSpy - Golfing Performance By Handicap

Some of the more notable results of this study are:
  • The largest percentage of golfers who track their scores have handicaps between 11 and 15;
  • Only about 10% of golfers who track their scores shoot below 80 on a regular basis;
  • About 50% of golfers break 90 on a regular basis (good news!);
  • For scratch golfers performance on par 3s is very important - they tend to score higher on par 3s - relative to par - than they do on par 4s and par 5s;
  • As you might expect, eliminating double bogies or worse is a key to scoring lower.  For example  - golfers with handicaps between 6 and 10 make 2.8 double bogies or worse per round, while golfers with handicaps between 8.9 double bogies or worse per round.  Wow!

What do I think this data says for golfers who want to score lower - particularly those with handicaps above 15?  I think these results scream that developing Better Shot Consistency, Better Misses, and an Improved Short Game can help you score lower and have more fun on the golf course.

2015 PGA Equipment Show!

The 2015 PGA Equipoment Show will be held in Orlando starting next week.  I will be attending for the 5th time - and as usual am really looking foward to it.  I plan to provide some information from the Show in my February newsletter.

The Golf Channel Morning Drive folks will be spending a lot of time next week covering the Show.  Here is a link to a Press Release that talks about the Morning Drive PGA Equipment Show coverage:
