Information to Improve YOUR Golf Game (December 2014)

2014 Pro Golf Synopsis Now Available

This is the third year that I have noted this publication in my newsletter. Richie Hunt, an expert statistician and avid golfer, prepares this eBook.  It is  a great value ($10) for golfers who want to get insights both into what creates success on the PGA Tour, and into how all of us mortals can improve our games from a strategy standpoint.  The eBook also presents performance statistics for each of the PGA Tour golfers.

To give you a flavor for what is in the eBook, here is a link to the Table of Contents:

Here is one of the chapters from the eBook - discussing the fact that pro golfers make a higher percentage of their par-or-worse putts from 5 to 15 feet than they do for birdie putts from the same distance - and why he believes this happens:

Creating a Gain Bias to Make More Birdie Putts

The Launch Monitor Data
You Need To See

Many of you have had your club performance measured on a Launch Monitor.  Often the type of data that are focused on are swing and ball speed, smash factor, ball spin, launch angle, carry and total distance - and these are all important.

BUT - if you truly are looking to get the best performance from either your present clubs or a new set of fitted clubs - there are two other pieces of data that you need to insist on seeing: Club Face Angle at Impact, and Club Path at Impact - relative to your target.

The path of a golf shot is determined by what are called the Ball Flight Laws.  Long-time readers of this newsletter will remember a writeup I did in the August 2011 newsletter, the link is provided below:

Ball Flight Laws Explained - August 2011 Newsletter

In simple terms - the initial direction of any golf shot is largely determined by where the club face points at impact, and the path (slice, hook, etc.) of any shot is determined largely by the difference between the club face angle at impact and the club path at impact.

Below is a screen shot of a driver shot that I recorded on my Flightscope X1 Launch Monitor:

Face Path Data

For this shot, the Path at Impact was 10.7 degrees left of the target (Outside to Inside), and the Face At Impact was 3.9 degrees left of the target.  Shot path - shot started left and faded back to the right but still left of his target.

OK, but so what?  Well, the difference between the Face and Path at Impact was about 6.8 degrees.  Golfers will hit golf shots that go fairly straight when the difference between Face and Path at Impact is about 2 degrees or less.  When this difference gets to be more than 4 or 5 degrees golfers make a Glancing Blow on the golf ball - and lots of potential distance is lost.

For the golfer whose data is shown above, he will produce maximum distance and create better and more consistent golf shots if he can reduce his Face - Path difference to less than 2 degrees.   The best options for him to do this will include:

  • Being custom fit for clubs that can help him reduce the Face - Path difference.  This could include getting the right driver face angle, the right overall club weight, and the right club MOI / swingweight;
  • Getting instruction to help him correctly grip the golf club and swing his clubs on a less outside-to-inside path; or
  • A combination of the above.

Again - knowing your Face - Path information for your golf clubs and for your golf swing is hugely important - if you want to maximize the performance of your golf clubs and play to your potential.

Every 2 years, Golf Digest creates a list of the Top 100 Club Fitters in the U.S.  Last week, I submitted my application to be considered for this list.  This time, in addition to asking for a writeup about each clubfitter applying, they asked to have some club fitting success stories sent to them directly from golfers. Thanks to the five of you who sent success stories to Golf Digest about how I have helped you play your best golf!

Happy Holidays!
