Time For My Nap!!

Many of you are aware, from such books as "The Talent Code," that research has shown that Mastery of a skill can require as much as 10,000 hours of effort.

Well, there is a hidden Extra Element in the formula for Mastery that is not often talked about.  Sleep!  It turns out that the same research that suggests that 10,000 hours of effort are required for Mastery shows that sleep plays a big role in mastering a skill.  Elite performers sleep more than others, do their practicing in small blocks of time, and in fact also often take naps during the day.

Here are two interesting links on this research that I hope you enjoy:

Time for my morning nap!!

I am sure by now you know that I love pretty much anything that Daniel Coyle writes on his Talent Code web site - here is a recent link to an article related doing Challenges instead of Drills to improve your skills...

Lessons From Two New
AGCP Master Fitters!

I just attended the 9th Annual Assn. of Golf Clubfitting Professionals (AGCP) Roundtable.  The first day of the Roundtable served as an "exam" for two experienced club fitters who achieved their Masters of Club Fitting Certification - the highest AGCP Certification.  Dan Wilt (on the left below) from Link to the Links in Columbia, TN, and Bill Weitzel from Conquest Custom Golf in Cincinnati, OH presented the results they did from a recent fitting they performed.

There were lessons from their presentation that can be valuable for you if you want to be properly fit for golf clubs.  Here they are:

  • Finding out the expectations a golfer has for a custom fitting is very important.  What does the golfer expect to achieve - but then also, feedback from the fitter on what are realistic expectations from a custom fitting.
  • A normal question to ask in a fitting is what is the golfer's average score.  BUT an even better question to ask - and be asked - is what is the RANGE of scores that a golfer achieves.  This gives the fitter an indication of the consistency the golfer presently achieves.
  • What is the typical ball flight that the golfer has for his golf shots?  BUT in addition is the golfer achieving this ball flight with his shots (fade, pull hook, etc.) during the fitting.  Bill noted that if he sees that the golfer is not achieving what he says his ball flight is during a fitting, he stops the fitting - something is not right and it is not likely the fitting will produce good results.
  • They noted that the major goals of their fittings is to find a club combination that results in the club path and face angle, at impact, being within about 2 degrees of each other - and to achieve center-of-face contact.  When this happens, the golfer will get great results in terms of distance and accuracy of shots.
  • Finally, they noted that - yes - increased distance is important and most often one of the golfer's expectations.  BUT Shot Dispersion is also a key goal for any custom fitting.  When during a fitting you find increased distance and minimal shot dispersion, you know you have found a club setup that will truly help the golfer.

The golfer who was the "exam subject" has played his best golf since he started playing with his new irons.  Wishon 771 CSI heads, Aerotech i70 A flex shafts - clubs MOI and frequency matched.  Congratulations Dan and Bill on your Masters Certification!

Golf Club Myths

On Monday October 20 I will publish a Podcast Interview that I was fortunate to do with Dave Tutelman.  Dave - as readers of this newsletter know - has a wonderful web site where he has published may articles on analyses he has done on golf club performance, here is the "Golf and Golf Technology" portion of his site...

One of my favorite links on his site is the link to a discussion of some interesting Golf Myths - here is that link...

Dave Tutelman - "Common Myths Debunked"

In the course of doing a little "Golf Myth" research, I also found this additional interesting link on some Golf Equipment and Performance myths that was published by Titleist.  This information was published a few years ago, but I think still good reading!
