Information to improve your golf game (May 2014)

I Wonder What THEY Know?

There are from time to time some gems of information in Golf World magazine, in the "Equipment" section.  Here is a link to an article that was in the May 5, 2014 issue....

Golf World Article - "Searching For Answers"

The article talks about some of the Tour players switching putters "as often as kids want candy."  Well, that can be said for lots of non Tour players, right?

What was really INTERESTING to me were two facts imbedded in the middle of the article:
  • NONE of the top 7 players in the world has recently made a putter change, and
  • Only 4 of the top 20 players in the world have tried a different putter this year.
You can make of this what you wish.  But my view is that the top players are playing with a putter that really fits them well - and they know it!

Here is a fun little article I just found from Dave Tutelman, with some more golf myths you might not be aware of:

Length = Length PLUS

Custom club fitters often note that there are 21 major variables that can affect the performance of golf clubs.  Many of these variables are important - like club MOI, shaft weight, and shaft flex - but for the average golfer, Golf Club Length ranks up near the top of the list.

Most often when Club Length is an issue for a golfer, it is because he or she is playing with clubs that are too long.  There are, to me, two major reasons that playing with the correct club lengths is important:
  • The wrong club length (again usually too long) takes a golfer out of an athletic posture - one that can give the golfer the best chance to make a good swing at the golf ball and create the mos distance and accuracy; and
  • The wrong club length can make it more difficult for a golfer to hit the center of the clubface - and center contact is a key to creating the most distance for a given swing speed.

When I fit golfers for clubs, one of the first measurements I make is of the golfer's Wrist To Floor (WTF) distance.  I have the golfer stand in a comfortable position and measure the distance from the floor to the major lifeline in his left hand (for right-handed golfers).  Tom Wishon (Tom Wishon Golf) gave me permission to reproduce the chart below, which I look at after I measure Wrist To Floor for a golfer:

So for example, if your WTF is 36 inches, this chart suggests a starting best length for your driver is 44 inches.  This is not set in stone - there are many things that can affect what would be your best driver length - such as your swing tempo, your downswing release location, and your swing path.

Tom Wishon wrote an extensive article on Fitting Club Length in August 2009.  One of the most interesting parts of that article is his statement that if you have a outside to inside swing path you should not be playing with golf clubs that are longer than those suggested by WTF measurements.

What if YOU measure your WTF and find that your clubs seem to long for you?  Well, perhaps you can do your own test - hit some shots where you grip your club down to an appropriate length (sometimes this could be as much as 2 inches), and see what your results are.  If you find that you are making more center contact, getting more distance, and you feel that you are making better swings - well, you might be on to something!

Clubhead Size - And Focus

Recently two seemingly "unrelated" things happened that I hope you will find interesting.

One was an experience that my friend, Bob Williams (The Pasadena Clubfitter) said I could share here - from an AGCP forum post he made.  Bob was doing a fitting with a big, strong golfer, and could not find a club/shaft/weight combination that would help him. But then he handed the golfer a Pure Solid Perfect 7 iron club - one that has a head MUCH smaller than today's conventional club head.  The golfer immediately started making better contact, his swing speed increased and he was getting more distance - AND his golf swing improved!  Other AGCP members responded to Bob's post, and said they too have seen that sometimes golfers obtain better results with smaller club heads.

The other experience was during an iron fitting that I did about 2 weeks ago.  The golfer is a pretty good ball striker.  When I do fittings I put a little silver dot on golf balls that my Flightscope launch monitor can "see" to allow it to correctly calculate ball spin.  The golfer asked me change the dot location so at setup the golf ball logo was at the back of the golf ball.  Why? - for him, positioning the golf ball this way helps him to focus on striking the golf ball correctly.

Both of these stories have a common element of Focus.  We all tend to think that if a club head is bigger it must be better.  But do we know that to be true - and how can we know that without doing experiments to find out?  And the second story - maybe how we orient the golf ball on the tee when we hit drives and shots on par threes can help us to improve our focus and hit more solid and better shots?

Food for thought!
